About The Position

The McGill University School of Social Work is seeking a Field Supervisor for the Master of Applied Science (M.Sc.A.) in Couple and Family Therapy (CFT) Program. The supervisor will provide one-on-one supervision to students throughout their internship, ensuring their practical and clinical training meets the requirements of the Ordre des travailleurs sociaux et des thérapeutes conjugaux et familiaux du Québec (OTSTCFQ) and the Ordre des Psychologues du Québec (OPQ) for specific practicum courses (CAFT 606, CAFT 611, CAFT 612). The role involves fostering a respectful, trusting, and supportive learning environment, facilitating the development of clinical skills, integrating theoretical knowledge into practice, and focusing on evidence-based best practices in couple and family therapy. The supervisor will also guide reflection on interpersonal and personal issues that may impact therapy, while respecting supervisory boundaries. Requirements

  • Must be a supervisor or field supervisor for the Master of Applied Science (M.Sc.A.) in Couple and Family Therapy (CFT) Program.
  • Must ensure practical, clinical training is consistent with the requirements of the Ordre des travailleurs sociaux et des thérapeutes conjugaux et familiaux du Québec (OTSTCFQ) and the Ordre des Psychologues du Québec (OPQ).
  • Must respect the Code of Ethics of the OTSTCFQ, OPQ, and AAMFT.
  • Must meet the criteria of the university about the amenities of the OPQ and OTSTCFQ.
  • Must provide an assessment of the student using the Evaluation Form provided by the university at the end of every semester of the internship.
  • Must ensure that the student has access to workspace that meets the standards for professional Couple and Family Therapy practice.
  • Must ensure that the student is a suitable candidate for the placement and has received the administrative authorization to begin their internship.
  • Must provide an atmosphere of respect, support, and encouragement for professional growth.
  • Must review the supervisee’s learning goals and ensure that these remain an integral part of the supervision and evaluation process throughout the year.
  • Must facilitate the supervisee’s learning and development of clinical skills; presentation, assessment, and treatment skills.
  • Must conduct supervisory sessions in a professionally ethical manner.
  • Must develop a respectful collaborative process whereby feedback is provided on conceptual, process, and practical issues.
  • Must provide feedback by one student written evaluation per term submitted to Heather MacIntosh, Program Director.
  • Must maintain confidentiality regarding supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Provide student supervision over the span of their internship on a 1:1 supervisor-to-student ratio.
  • Ensure practical, clinical training is consistent with the requirements of the OTSTCFQ and OPQ for students registered in MScA CFT practicum courses.
  • Facilitate the development of supervisee competence through supporting their learning in integrating theoretical knowledge into practice, formulating clinical hypotheses and treatment plans, and developing psychotherapy treatment skills.
  • Focus on evidence-based best practice methods and couple and family therapy competencies.
  • Provide a context to facilitate the reflection and exploration of interpersonal and individual personal supervisee issues that can impact upon or be triggered by issues in therapy with clients, while respecting the boundaries of the supervisory relationship.
  • Abide by the terms and commitments of the Internship Supervision Contract.
  • Respect the Code of Ethics of the OTSTCFQ, OPQ, and AAMFT.
  • Meet the criteria of the university regarding the amenities of the OPQ and OTSTCFQ.
  • Communicate with academic staff if the student is experiencing difficulties.
  • Provide an assessment of the student using the Evaluation Form provided by the university at the end of every semester of the internship.
  • Allow the student an opportunity to provide their feedback regarding supervision, site, and overall internship experience.
  • Ensure that the student has access to workspace that meets the standards for professional Couple and Family Therapy practice.
  • Ensure that the student is a suitable candidate for the placement and has received the administrative authorization to begin their internship.
  • Ensure that practical training is consistent with the requirements of the OPQ and OTSTCFQ.
  • Provide an atmosphere of respect, support, and encouragement for professional growth.
  • Review the supervisee’s learning goals and ensure that these remain an integral part of the supervision and evaluation process throughout the year.
  • Facilitate the supervisee’s learning and development of clinical skills; presentation, assessment, and treatment skills.
  • Provide the opportunity to work with the team and the other supervisors in the clinic through the use of live supervision with the team behind the one-way mirror and case presentations to the team.
  • Organize, with the other supervisors, orientation and monthly training sessions on various related topics throughout the year.
  • Review, give feedback on, and authorize all written material including assessments, progress notes, closing summaries, and any correspondence.
  • Conduct supervisory sessions in a professionally ethical manner and encourage the development of professional integrity and a respect for and knowledge of professional ethics and code of conduct in the supervisee.
  • Develop a respectful collaborative process whereby feedback is provided on conceptual, process, and practical issues.
  • Share collegial consultation with the Program Director to ensure the highest quality of service to the clients and supervision to the supervisee.
  • Provide feedback by one student written evaluation per term submitted to Heather MacIntosh, Program Director.
  • Consult with Program Staff should the supervisee be experiencing any problems in the placement that might require an extension or if there are concerns about the supervisee’s ability to pass the placement.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding supervision except as indicated.
  • Jointly, with the supervisee, evaluate the progress of the supervisee, based on the learning goals established at the beginning of the year.
  • Be open to feedback from the supervisee on the supervisory process on an ongoing basis and seek consultation from colleagues and program staff should problems be encountered that are difficult to resolve within the supervisory process.
  • Be available to the supervisee between supervisory sessions for brief clarification of supervisory issues.
