About The Position

An employee in this position performs effective enforcement of the County’s animal control ordinance through observation, behavior assessment, trapping, applying animal services law and conducting investigations. This includes answering public and law enforcement calls concerning unvaccinated, unwanted, and nuisance animals.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Two (2) years of experience involving contact with the public and in handling and caring for animals
  • Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license.
  • Ability to attain Certified Rabies Vaccinator (CRV) and Euthanasia Technician (ET) certifications within one year.
  • Knowledge of law/code enforcement principles, procedures, and techniques.
  • Knowledge and use of firearms to include long guns, shotguns, and tranquilizing pistols.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of animal control and animal confinement.
  • Skill in handling animals.
  • Ability to work under pressure and to deal tactfully with diverse individuals.
  • Ability to use data processing software and other office software products to produce reports, capture case data, and research as needed.
  • Ability to interpret codes, ordinances, policies and procedures.
  • Ability to work under challenging situations.
  • Ability to deal tactfully with diverse individuals.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate degree in Animal Science, Biology, or related field.

Responsibilities

  • Enforces animal control ordinance as well as state and local laws pertaining to vaccinations; provides humane animal treatment; and collects fees and penalties
  • Responds and investigates animal complaints and captures stray animals via County vehicle.
  • Assists in the office by answering and returning calls.
  • Provides vaccinations as appropriate; traps domesticated, livestock, and wildlife; and/or tranquilizes animals.
  • Participates in daily activities relating to animal care and certain operations of shelter
  • Promotes spay/neuter and vaccination programs throughout the County.
  • Participates in rabies control programs.
  • Promotes responsible pet ownership through humane education.
  • Reduces complaints; investigates bites; and deals with other animal related problems including over-population
  • Provides related training.
  • Attends required classes; maintains equipment.
  • Coordinates animal control investigations and programs with various law enforcement agencies.
  • Speaks to owners; warns owners regarding violations; charges repeat offenders; prepares cases; and testifies in court when needed.
  • Communicates with the public regarding adoptions, complaints, animal welfare and other animal problems.
  • Assists residents of County with needed animal supplies such as dog houses, food, straw for horses, etc.
  • Creates and submits reports.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
