About The Position

This position will supervise crews who perform a variety of roadway maintenance activities on state roads throughout Polk County, including pothole repairs, shoulder work, tree-trimming, sidewalk repairs, emergency response, etc. The Field Operations Supervisor II supports the safety and functionality of Florida’s transportation system through hands-on fieldwork and dependable service. Through cooperation, coordination and collaboration among the OneFDOT team, you will be contributing to a strong and empowering culture of TRREC: Trust, Relationships, Respect, Empowerment, and Communication. Requirements

  • Knowledge of Department regulations, policies and procedures relating to highway maintenance operations
  • Knowledge of Maintenance Management System (MMS) guidelines and production standards.
  • Skills in determining maintenance work priorities and organizing resources to meet deadlines
  • Ability to interpret roadway design standards, maintenance rating standards, specifications and plans
  • Ability to inspect completed maintenance projects to ensure quality products
  • Ability to supervise others in the completion of routine maintenance activities
  • Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing
  • Must be United States (U.S.) citizens or lawfully authorized alien workers.
  • Must possess a valid Class B CDL.
  • Must satisfactorily pass a criminal background check to work with or around Department of Corrections inmates.
  • Must be trained and maintain training certification from the Department of Corrections to supervise inmates.
  • Must obtain certification in Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) — Advanced Level within one year and maintain it.
  • Must be responsive to emergency situations within a very short timeframe and serve in the Transportation Emergency Management Team (TEMT).
  • Must have an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department’s Driver’s Record Requirements Policy.
  • Applicants must register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Drug and Alcohol (FMCSA) Clearinghouse.
  • Must meet the qualifications outlined in Title 49 CFR Part 391.11.
  • Male applicants born on or after October 1, 1962, must be registered with the Selective Service System (SSS) before their 26th birthday, or have a Letter of Registration Exemption from the SSS.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises employees spending majority of their time communicating with, motivating, training, and evaluating employees, and planning and directing employees' work.
  • Supervises Department of Corrections inmates crew performing maintenance activities.
  • Develops work schedule and assigns routine maintenance activities for the Department of Corrections (DOC) crews.
  • Issues daily work assignments to DOC officers and provides them with the appropriate tools, equipment, and materials to complete assignments.
  • Performs field inspections to verify the quantity and quality of work completed.
  • Ensures work is performed in compliance with Standard indexes and Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) policies and procedures.
  • Verifies FDOT and DOC crew's production, work time, materials, equipment usage and locations are reported accurately on crew sheets.
  • Performs work need surveys and plans work based on priorities.
  • Submits planned work schedules to the Unit's Maintenance Management System's (MMS) Manager.
  • Coordinates with the MMS Manager to plan resources and unit goals for FDOT and DOC crews.
  • Performs minor operational maintenance and ensures that the proper periodic preventative maintenance schedule is performed in a timely manner and that equipment is kept in good working condition by coordinating with the local shop.
  • Ensures that FDOT and DOC crews are following procedures for equipment maintenance and inspections.
