About The Position

This is an entry-level position performing semi-skilled work operating light equipment for road repair, mowing, and tree trimming. Responsibilities include collecting, loading, and disposing of debris and garbage from streets, alleys, drainage ditches, parks, and other public areas. The role also involves general labor for street and public property maintenance and construction, garbage removal, and maintenance of parks, recreation fields, and landfill operations. Employees in this class perform routine tasks and may have limited work experience, serving as a training class for advancement.

Requirements

• Minimum age of 18.
• Some common labor work experience.
• Knowledge of common tools.
• Ability to learn proper equipment operating procedures, methods and practices.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors and the public.
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
• Ability to maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include the following: Lift and carry up to 80lbs; pulls, pushes or drags up to 80lbs. Walking or standing for an extended period of time. Operating assigned equipment and tools.
• Ability to work under harsh weather conditions.
• Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for: making observations communicating with others reading and writing operating assigned vehicles, equipment and tools.
• Completion of 8th grade required.
• Must possess a valid Texas Driver's License.

Nice To Haves

• Experience in the division or in a related field preferred.
• High school degree or GED preferred.
• Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at the level necessary for the successful job performance.

Responsibilities

• Operates small to light equipment.
• Performs minor maintenance or service checks on equipment.
• Performs unskilled and semi-skilled labor work related to various maintenance and construction activities.
• Prepares a daily log of activities.
• Cleans and removes debris from streets, alleys, drainage ditches, and other areas.
• Mowing and weed trimming at parks and recreation areas, city rights of way, landfill access roads and perimeter fence.
• Takes part in placement of barricades, signs, flashers and safety cones.
• Performs related duties and responsibilities as required.
• Subject to afterhours call out for emergency situations.
