About The Position

The role of Field Inspector I involves investigative work in contractor licensing investigations and building construction investigations. This position performs advanced and responsible technical work in inspecting building constructions, alterations, and repairs to enforce compliance with adopted building codes.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma supplemented by five (5) years of construction experience in either of the following trades: Building, Electrical, Mechanical, or Plumbing as a supervisor, inspector, foreman, contractor, or journeyman.
  • Must possess a valid Florida driver's license.
  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 45 pounds and also push or pull heavy objects.
  • Ability to communicate effectively using verbal, written and visual communication.
  • Must be able to operate a motor vehicle to visit job sites.
  • Must be able to walk, stoop, bend, and climb to make inspections.
  • Ability to read and interpret building construction plans and specifications.
  • Ability to investigate complaints dealing with violations of laws and ordinances.
  • Ability to enforce codes and regulations firmly, tactfully, and impartially.
  • Ability to maintain records and prepare and submit reports.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, contractors, engineers, and the public.
  • Ability to operate a computer.

Nice To Haves

  • Applicants must obtain provisional license in one of the following trades: Building, Electrical, Mechanical, or Plumbing within 90 days of hire, in accordance with chapter 468, Florida Statutes.
  • Must successfully pass all examinations to achieve Standard Certification in the trade hired above within one (1) year from the date of provisional license issuance.

Responsibilities

  • Investigates complaints of violations concerning contractor licensing requirements, unpermitted construction, and construction code issues.
  • Performs as back-up for inspector or plans examination staff.
  • Inspects building construction to ensure compliance with codes and regulations.
  • Makes final inspections of building against approved plans to ensure that the plans have been compiled with.
  • Performs records maintenance, clerical work, and activity reports.
  • Answers telephone questions from the public pertaining to building problems.
  • Issues verbal and written instructions to contractors and other interested parties to correct licensing and/or construction violations.
  • Performs related work as required.
