Field Engineer, AI Labs

Turing•Seattle, WA

About The Position

The Field Engineer works with frontier AI labs to evaluate Turing datasets using the labs’ models, interpret results, and deliver findings and data to clients. The role runs model evaluations and benchmarks, moves data through internal systems, prepares client-facing reports and materials, and supports sales conversations as the technical subject-matter expert. It is explicitly neither a research role nor a forward-deployed role. The position is based in the United States, with a preference for the San Francisco Bay Area; remote work within the US is considered. The role is aimed at a junior-to-mid-level individual contributor, generally with roughly one to five years after a degree, though strong new graduates with shipped work are also considered.

Requirements

  • Hands-on Python experience with model APIs and inference endpoints, such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Bedrock, or vLLM.
  • Experience with evaluation and judging pipelines, pandas, and SQL.
  • At least one relevant delivered project involving a model or dataset, such as building an evaluation, running a benchmark, serving or fine-tuning a model, delivering a forecasting model to a stakeholder, or owning a dataset end to end.
  • Clear written and spoken communication, with comfort presenting results to researchers and participating in sales calls.
  • A scrappy and dependable approach to work.

Nice To Haves

  • Startup experience owning work end to end; the posting says a year or two at a startup can count for more than pedigree.
  • Strong new graduates with shipped work are considered.
  • A model comparison, a built evaluation, or a write-up explaining a model failure may be submitted with the application.

Responsibilities

  • Configure model APIs from AI labs and other providers, run models across Turing datasets, and move data through internal data systems.
  • Run evaluations and benchmarks and prepare reports explaining model limitations and what data could help address them.
  • Respond to technical questionnaires from client labs.
  • Pull subsets of Turing data by difficulty or select high-quality data points for clients.
  • Check the provenance of shipped data and keep the catalog, website, and data hub current.
  • Join sales calls as the technical representative, explain available data and its formats and capabilities, and present information live to labs.
  • Own last-mile delivery and packaging to ensure clients receive what they requested.

Benefits

  • Opportunity to work on frontier AI and help leading AI labs improve advanced models through expert datasets, reinforcement learning environments, and benchmarks.
  • Opportunity to contribute to leading-edge AI research and showcase work at conferences such as ICLR, ICML, and NeurIPS.
  • Opportunity to apply frontier AI innovation to enterprise business challenges.
  • Collaboration with colleagues with AI experience from Google, Meta, Amazon, and other leading technology companies.
  • Work with startup speed, ownership, and impact.
