About The Position

The Field Engineer – Substation Commissioning provides on-site technical oversight for construction, installation, testing, and commissioning of high-voltage substation equipment on EPC projects. This role serves as the field liaison between engineering design teams, construction crews, subcontractors, and utility clients. The Field Engineer ensures that field installation aligns with drawings, specifications, and project standards while coordinating activities, resolving technical issues, and supporting construction sequencing to maintain schedule.

Requirements

  • Strong knowledge of substation construction methods, high-voltage equipment, and protection/control systems
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, wiring diagrams, and specifications
  • Experience with commissioning activities including functional tests and relay logic validation
  • Troubleshooting skills for wiring issues, equipment failures, and SCADA/communications problems
  • Proficiency with test equipment such as OMICRON, Doble, Megger, or equivalent
  • Effective communication with construction crews, project managers, engineering staff, and clients
  • Competence in managing documentation, redlines, test reports, and turnover packages
  • Ability to work under schedule pressure while maintaining a strong safety culture
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • 5–7+ years of experience supporting EPC or utility substation projects
  • Familiarity with EPC project processes, including RFIs, submittals, QA/QC workflows, and turnover requirements

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with commissioning and protection/control preferred
  • Safety certifications or recognized industry credentials (NETA, IEEE, etc.) are advantageous

Responsibilities

  • Interpret design packages and ensure compliance with drawings, specifications, and standards
  • Coordinate field activities and resolve technical issues to maintain project schedule
  • Execute commissioning plans and procedures for breakers, transformers, protection systems, SCADA, and communications equipment
  • Perform functional testing, point-to-point verification, logic checks, and support energization sequencing
  • Verify installation quality and enforce QA/QC standards
  • Oversee wiring, labeling, equipment placement, and system integration
  • Maintain documentation including test reports, redlines, punch lists, as-builts, and turnover deliverables
  • Identify and mitigate field risks related to safety, design conflicts, schedule, and constructability
  • Support client walk-downs, acceptance milestones, audits, and turnover processes
  • Ensure compliance with safety procedures, industry regulations, and site-specific requirements
