About The Position

We are currently seeking a qualified Field Engineer / Specialist (FS) – RSSOM to join our infrastructure team, based out of Toronto, ON. The FS will be responsible for overseeing the construction of the Step-up Substation (SUSS) and/or Operations, Maintenance and Service Facility (OMSF). SUSS is a power facility that will be supplying permanent power to the future Ontario Line traction and stations with a fast-paced schedule of construction. The facility is an at grade construction of the steel structure building and transformer pads which is located alongside the existing Lakeshore West rail corridor. Therefore, there is a considerable interface with an active rail corridor which requires meticulous planning and execution. This facility has a direct interface with the Exhibition Place and Liberty Village hence it would require active engagement with many stakeholders which need care, consideration and communications. OMSF is a critical piece of infrastructure in the Ontario Line located in Thorncliffe Park. This facility will house the Maintenance and Power Facility along with the Yard and Operations Control Centre. The construction duration is conservative and involves managing multiple interfaces with the City of Toronto and other Civil Parent Companies. This role will also require active interactions with major stakeholders like CP Rail, HONI, etc. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to a transformative transit project that includes 15 stations and over 15 km of new alignment, delivered through a P3 model with a 30-year operations and maintenance horizon. The Field Specialist will report to the Lead Field Specialist and performs construction engineering assignments of a varied nature requiring a full working knowledge of construction engineering practices. Exercises professional judgment within the framework of broad guidelines provided by superiors. May have a responsibility to provide direction for less experienced construction engineers, or construction office technical or clerical personnel. The Field Specialist is responsible for monitoring the technical requirements of the work and verifying quantities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related technical discipline, or equivalent field experience.
  • Minimum 5–7 years of relevant experience in infrastructure or transit construction.
  • Experience in construction supervision or field engineering roles on large-scale infrastructure projects.
  • Familiarity with RSSOM systems including traction power, signaling, communications, and rolling stock integration is an asset.
  • Strong understanding of construction methods, materials, and quality standards.
  • Strong focus on safety.
  • Proficiency in interpreting architectural and engineering drawings.
  • Effective communication and problem-solving skills in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency in MS Office and Bluebeam; experience with AutoCAD and Navisworks is preferred.
  • Awareness of environmental compliance and industry quality standards.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with RSSOM systems including traction power, signaling, communications, and rolling stock integration is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Monitors the activities of contractors to ensure compliance with project technical requirements.
  • Ensure that safety and creation as well as maintenance of a safe workplace and environment is the primary consideration and priority in the delivery of all work.
  • Reviews contractor’s documentation including risk assessments, method statements and inspection and test plans. Attends necessary inspections of the works on behalf of Metrolinx.
  • Monitor’s the contractor’s assurance activities including the resolution of non-conforming items.
  • Assists construction superintendents and contractors in planning construction methods and procedures. Coordinates and resolves engineering or construction problems with superintendents and contractors.
  • Interprets design engineering drawings
  • Reviews design drawings, related vendor and contractor drawings and installation instructions and studies interface problems.
  • Provides daily quantities tracking for commodities reporting.
  • Reviews field change notices/requests, extra work orders and back charge notices.
  • Implements project controls tools on the construction site.
  • Assists in the preparation of cost estimates and reviews project design and engineering bills of materials to ensure their completeness.
  • Prepares and maintains daily reports.
  • Reviews updated contractor schedules, as assigned.
  • Provides input to constructability and lessons learned.
