About The Position

ENTRUST Solutions Group Canada is seeking a Field Engineer – Power Systems to support power generation facilities across Canada. This role combines hands-on field testing with advanced analytical modeling, reporting, and regulatory compliance work. Projects range from small generation facilities (3 MW) to some of Canada’s largest assets (1,400+ MW), spanning hydroelectric, gas, steam, and nuclear technologies. Under the guidance of a Senior Engineer, this role provides technical leadership during field assignments while contributing to complex generator modeling and compliance initiatives. This position is ideal for engineers who enjoy both in-plant, hands-on work and deep analytical problem-solving within the power systems domain.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
  • Relevant engineering experience in one or more of the following: Power systems analysis Generator modeling Field testing or commissioning Control systems and/or excitation systems
  • Licensed Professional Engineer in Canada (P.Eng.) or eligible for licensure.
  • Strong understanding of synchronous generators, excitation systems, and system stability.
  • Advanced experience with MATLAB/Simulink, PSCAD, PSS®E, or equivalent power system tools.
  • Strong technical writing, reporting, and documentation skills.
  • Willingness and ability to travel to client sites across Canada (up to 30%).

Nice To Haves

  • Experience developing engineering tools or software using Python, C/C++, or similar languages.
  • Hands-on experience with generator controls, protection systems, or commissioning activities.
  • Familiarity with NERC MOD and PRC standards or similar regulatory frameworks.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and on-site decision-making capabilities.
  • Residence within approximately one hour of a major Canadian airport.

Responsibilities

  • Lead on-site generator testing at hydroelectric, gas, steam, and nuclear power plants.
  • Direct plant operators and engineering staff through advanced testing procedures.
  • Install, validate, and troubleshoot high-precision data acquisition and monitoring equipment.
  • Make critical, real-time engineering decisions during complex testing scenarios.
  • Ensure safety compliance, test quality, and adherence to standardized procedures.
  • Analyze test data using internally developed software tools.
  • Serve as technical lead during field assignments and mentor junior engineers.
  • Apply power systems and analog circuit fundamentals in real-world environments.
  • Interface with major generator OEMs and technologies (e.g., GE, Siemens, ABB).
  • Develop generator, exciter, and control system models for power system studies.
  • Perform advanced analysis of test data using proprietary internal tools.
  • Prepare high-quality NERC compliance reports and technical documentation.
  • Develop and refine test plans and methodologies for future projects.
  • Provide subject-matter expertise in generator dynamics, simulation, and control systems.
  • Coordinate with utilities, ISOs, OEMs, and plant engineering teams.
  • Remain available for periodic travel as required (minimum ~20%).
