The Field Engineer Intern supports marine and heavy civil construction projects through a combination of field and office-based experiences. Working alongside experienced engineers, project managers, and construction professionals, this role provides hands-on exposure to project planning, estimating, and scheduling while gaining meaningful experience on complex, high-impact projects. Interns will be immersed in Ballard’s collaborative, safety-first culture and have the opportunity to learn from industry leaders, build relationships, and develop the skills needed to launch a successful career in construction.

Requirements

• Currently enrolled in an accredited bachelor's degree program in Construction Management, Construction Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related field.
• Must have completed at least two years of coursework (sophomore standing or higher) by the start of the internship.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
• Interest in learning construction management and project controls processes
• Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
• Effective verbal and written communication skills
• Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
• Ability to adapt and learn in a fast-paced construction environment
• Demonstrated leadership potential through academics, extracurricular activities, athletics, or work experience

Nice To Haves

• Previous internships, field experience, or coursework related to engineering, construction, or project management is preferred but not required.
• Experience working in team-based environments, student organizations, or leadership roles is a plus.
• Familiarity with AutoCAD or similar design software preferred

Responsibilities

• Support project planning efforts through reviewing drawings, specifications, survey data, and project documents.
• Assist with quantity takeoffs, cost estimates, and project feasibility evaluations.
• Participate in engineering and design activities for temporary work and construction planning.
• Observe and support field construction activities to ensure alignment with project plans, safety requirements, and quality standards.
• Participate in site visits and project inspections to monitor progress and productivity.
• Assist with document control, reporting, and project record management.
• Support material procurement activities, vendor communications, and subcontract administration.
• Participate in safety meetings, work planning activities, and hazard analysis development.
• Promote and support a culture of safety on all project sites.
