Field Controls Engineer
About The Position
Supporting mission-critical Industrial Control Systems (ICS) within the power generation industry. Experience with Distributed Control Systems, Windows and Linux administration, VMware virtualization, industrial networking, and OT infrastructure supporting electric power generation. Ability to commission, modernize, troubleshoot, and maintain highly available control systems while working directly with customers during outages, startups, and modernization projects throughout North America. Strong technical troubleshooting, customer service, and cross-functional collaboration in demanding critical infrastructure environments.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Control Systems Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
- Familiarity with Industrial Controls (DCS) typically found in power plant facilities, alongside general industrial or SCADA frameworks.
- Experience with Linux/Unix/Windows administration, virtualization (VMware, Red Hat KVM), and core networking/firewall protocols.
- Willingness to undertake frequent travel and site-based work for project integration and support. 50% -80% extended over night travel.
Responsibilities
- Commission, test, and optimize I&C (Instrumentation & Control) systems, automation processors, sensors, drives, and control networks.
- Build, deploy, and manage servers, thin clients, and industrial infrastructure bridging enterprise IT environments with field components.
- Analyze system behavior, run interlock and control logic checks, apply patches, write automation scripts (such as Python or Bash), and perform customer acceptance tests.
- Deploy directly to power plants, utility sites, or client facilities for installation, maintenance, testing, and handovers.
- Configure, commission, troubleshoot, and maintain Distributed Control Systems supporting power generation facilities.
- Install, configure, and administer Windows and Linux servers supporting industrial control systems.
- Deploy and maintain VMware virtual infrastructure hosting critical OT applications.
- Configure and troubleshoot Cisco switching, VLANs, routing, and industrial Ethernet networks.
- Install and validate Siemens software patches, service packs, and security updates.
- Support Security Servers, Deployment Servers, Terminal Servers, Engineering Stations, Operator Stations, and Historian Servers.
- Administer Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, certificates, and authentication services.
- Manage Foreman/Puppet infrastructure for software deployment and system configuration.
- Configure and validate GPS/NTP time synchronization across plant automation networks.
- Perform backups, RAID configuration, firmware upgrades, hardware replacement, and disaster recovery activities.
- Provide onsite technical leadership during outages, commissioning efforts, and modernization projects across North America.
