About The Position

Natural Resource Solutions Inc. (NRSI) is seeking a qualified field biologist with experience working in remote field locations to join their growing team. The role is primarily based out of the Waterloo office, with fieldwork expected in northern and southern Ontario, and occasionally out of province. This position offers a hybrid work arrangement, requiring at least two days per week in the office when not in the field. The successful applicant will contribute to both field- and office-based tasks, including ecological surveys, background reviews, data analysis, report preparation, and proposal support.

Requirements

  • A diploma or degree in Biology or Environmental Sciences. Similar educational experience will also be considered.
  • Minimum of 1-2 years of experience in leading, coordinating and conducting ecological field surveys.
  • Technically skilled and proficient in the identification of Ontario wildlife species.
  • Ensuring high-quality field data collection, accurate field notes, and adherence to standard procedures and protocols.
  • Willing and able to travel for multi-day field surveys, often in remote locations, under inclement weather, in a variety of environmental conditions, and occasionally for long hours. This may include overnight stays.
  • Proven ability to maintain accuracy and attention to detail, including the upkeep of well-organized and thorough field notes.
  • Physically fit, as some field work for this position will be physically demanding.
  • Ability to work independently on a regular basis as well as collaboratively in a team, and take initiative in field settings.
  • Proven proficiency in report writing, data entry and analysis.
  • A commitment to continual improvement of technical abilities.
  • A valid driver’s license.
  • Over 21 years old in order to drive NRSI fleet vehicles and rental vehicles.
  • Access to a personal vehicle insured for work purposes.
  • Able to reliably commute on a regular basis to the work location.

Nice To Haves

  • Demonstrated experience conducting ecological surveys, such as breeding birds, insects, turtle basking/nesting, anuran breeding, snake surveys, vegetation inventories and/or Ecological Land Classification.
  • Certification in Ecological Land Classification for southern or northern Ontario.
  • Experience in project management.
  • Experience with non-vascular plant identification.
  • Experience operating ATVs/UTVs, or ARGOs.
  • Experience with trailering.
  • Demonstrated experience working in remote field locations.

Responsibilities

  • Leading and/or participating in ecological surveys in remote field locations.
  • Completing background reviews.
  • Managing and analyzing data.
  • Supporting the preparation of reports, including writing portions of reports.
  • Coordinating terrestrial and wetland field surveys, as required.
  • Supporting the preparation of proposals and cost estimates.
