About The Position

The Fiber Splicing Technician splices, tests, troubleshoots, and repairs fiber optic cables. This role involves various accountabilities such as end-of-line network testing, cable preparation, building fiber cases and enclosures, splicing fibers color for color, organizing cables within enclosures, sealing and placing cases, reading prints and maps, jumping trays, splicing at tie points and jumper cases, using OTDRs and optical power meters, rehabilitating gel-filled cases, redlining and documentation, performing case swaps and audits, and troubleshooting network issues. The technician may also pull cable through existing duct packages, conduit manually, by blowing, or mechanically, and splice and activate underground and aerial lines. The role also includes teamwork accountability, participating in day-to-day splicing activities, performing assigned crew activities, and collaborating with the splicing team to ensure work is performed safely, accurately, and in a timely manner. Depending on the level, participation in onboarding and training of crew members may be required. Customer management may involve responding to inquiries or complaints professionally. Safety management includes actively following safety policies and procedures, participating in daily Job-site Safety Analysis (JSA), and conducting daily inspections of vehicles and equipment. Project management aspects include working with the Foreman or Manager on coordinating, scheduling, and material ordering, providing updates on daily production, tracking work hours, and potentially being involved in invoice approvals for subcontractors and completing project milestones.

Requirements

Ability to do physical labor, climb ladders and poles, work in confined spaces, etc.
Ability to read blueprints for job specifications in placement of cables, location of utilities, etc.
Must be able to distinguish between different colors for connection of fibers.
Must be a self-starter and internally motivated to achieve corporate, department, and personal objectives.
Must have excellent interpersonal communication skills (oral and written) and be a team player.
Must possess excellent problem solving and decision-making skills.
Ability to use basic math skills to compute measurements, figure ohms, timecards, etc.
Ability to listen and to follow directions.
Must be organized, multi-tasked oriented, and maintain a neat and safe work environment.
Ability to work in high places on ladders and poles.
Ability to work in confined spaces.
Ability to distinguish different fiber connections.

Responsibilities

End-of-Line Network Testing: Testing light levels at the end of fiber networks for balanced signal between points is crucial to ensure proper signal transmission and network performance.
Cable Prep: Ensure that cables are properly labeled and organized to minimize errors during installation.
Build Fiber Cases and Enclosures: Constructing fiber cases and enclosures involves creating protective housing for fiber optic equipment and connections.
Splice Color for Color Fibers: When splicing fiber optic cables together, technicians match the colors of the fibers to ensure that the correct fibers are connected. Splice off color and multiple cables in one enclosure.
Organize the cables neatly within the enclosure, ensuring that they are properly routed and secured to prevent tangling or damage.
Sealing and Placement of Case: Ensuring that the enclosure is properly closed and secured to protect the equipment and cables inside from environmental elements.
Read Prints and Maps: Examine Splice Matrix and redline maps to understand fiber routes and assignments.
Jumping Trays: Routing fibers from one tray to another, possibly to optimize cable management, minimize signal loss, or create efficient pathways within the enclosure. Connect Jumper cables between jumper cases.
Splice Tie Point and Jumper Cases: Splicing fibers at a tie point involves connecting fibers from different cables.
Use Optical Time Domain Reflectometers (OTDRs) and optical power meters to locate breaks, measure attenuation, and test line integrity.
Rehab gel-filles cases: The process of refurbishing or rehabilitating gel-filled enclosures used in fiber optic networks.
Redlining and Documentation: Marking up or annotating existing drawings or documents with changes, updates, or corrections.
Case swaps and audits: Replacing one equipment case or enclosure with another.
Troubleshooting: Identifying, diagnosing, and resolving issues that can affect the performance and reliability of the network.
May pull cable through existing duct package, pull cable through conduit either manually, blowing, or mechanically, and splice and activate underground and aerial lines.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Participating in day-to-day Splicing activities in the field, including performing assigned crew activities, equipment, schedules, productivity, and administrative tasks
Proven ability to collaborate with Splicing team and perform activities with Splicing crew, ensuring work is performed in a safe, accurate, and timely manner
May participate in onboarding and training Splicing crew members (dependent on level)
Responds to inquiries or complaints from customers or members of the business community in a professional manner (dependent on level)
Actively follows safety policies and procedures in compliance with all relevant local, state, and federal regulations.
Participate in daily JSA (Job-site Safety Analysis) with the Splicing team
Conduct daily inspections and audits of vehicles and equipment to ensure compliance with safety standards and identify potential hazards.
Works with Foreman or Manager on coordinating, scheduling, and material ordering (depending on level)
Provide updates on daily production/job and keep track of work hours
Involvement in invoice approvals for subcontractors (dependent upon level and job assignment)
