About The Position

The Fiber Splicing Supervisor will lead, coach, and develop the fiber splicing team with a specific emphasis on safety and production. This role involves supervising the planning and execution of projects and contracts to achieve productivity and quality safely. The supervisor will read and interpret work orders, specifications, engineering drawings, and cut sheets to determine work to be done in sequence of tasks. Responsibilities include leading and participating in job hazard analysis and safety briefings, assisting with additional fiber network construction activities, troubleshooting and repairing the distribution network, prepping and splicing fiber optic cables, and installing/maintaining transmission and reception equipment for FTTH networks. The role also involves installing and maintaining network systems for private lines, initiating test and turn-up procedures, collecting and interpreting engineering documentation, supporting field maintenance teams, providing demand and preventive maintenance, and maintaining network documentation. The supervisor will troubleshoot MDF/headend issues with 3rd party providers, work within the engineering team to ensure connections meet specifications, and work on an on-call rotation as required. Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Associate degree or recognized equivalent required
  • At least five years of previous experience in the FTTH Telecom/fiber optic industry, with at least 2 years of both commercial construction and management experience, including supervising and managing sub-contractors
  • At least five years hands-on/field experience in fiber splicing, test equipment and restoration with demonstrated proficiency using fusion splicing machine
  • Must understand the underlying theories and concepts of broadband communication and including fiber optics and Metro Ethernet networks
  • Must understand local, state and federal construction regulations
  • Ability to use advanced test equipment like OTDR’s, optical power meters and other fiber testing equipment as required
  • Ability to read and comprehend floor plans, equipment manuals, schematics and complex instructions
  • Ability to work in high-stress environment with extreme weather fluctuations
  • Ability to work days, weekends, evenings and holidays and participate with on-call rotation as needed
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills in English
  • Must have active and clean, non-restrictive, state issued driver’s license in State where hired
  • Organizational skills, including time management, delegation, prioritization and multitasking

Responsibilities

  • Read and interpret work orders, specifications, engineering drawings and/or cut sheets to determine work to be done in sequence of task.
  • Lead and participate in job hazard analysis and safety briefings.
  • Assist with additional fiber network construction activities prior to splicing and closeout activities commence.
  • Troubleshoot and repair the distribution network from headend to terminal connection point.
  • Prep and splice fiber optic cables, locate problem areas and perform other repairs as needed. This requires proficiency with fusion splicer and fiber test equipment.
  • Install and maintain transmission and reception equipment for FTTH network.
  • Install and maintain network systems for private lines and determine solutions for any issues preventing the service from operating normally.
  • Initiate test and turn-up procedures with System Engineers in accordance with company compliance standards.
  • Collect and interpret engineering documentation, including schematics, fiber management systems and performance OTDR reports.
  • Support field maintenance teams, including IT, regional engineering teams and any other department as related to fiber network.
  • Provide demand and preventive maintenance for fiber network & FTTH.
  • Maintain proper network documentation on changes and upgrades.
  • Troubleshoot MDF/headend issues with 3rd party providers.
  • Work within the engineering team to ensure all connections are within required specifications.
  • Work on an on-call schedule rotation as required.
  • Other duties as assigned.
