About The Position

Legrand has an exciting opportunity for a Fiber Engineering Intern to join the Data Center Power and Control Division Team in New London, CT. The Fiber Engineering Intern is responsible for assisting the Fiber Optic Engineering group in the development, design, and testing of new and existing products.

Requirements

  • Education: Currently enrolled in, or recently completed BSME or other related engineering or physics field.
  • Experience: No experience required.
  • Skills/Knowledge/Abilities: Creative approach to problem solving based on solid theoretical engineering and math skills.
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks, which includes the development of assemblies using part models of components, is preferred. However, a general knowledge of CAD based design of mechanical systems is acceptable.
  • Knowledge of sheet metal and plastic design in SolidWorks preferred.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must have an acceptable level of interpersonal skills to work effectively in a positive team environment with internal company associates as well as outside suppliers and fabricators.
  • Must be able to contribute to several projects at a time.
  • Must be eager to learn new design and testing skills by working with the Fiber Engineering team, and to effectively apply those skills on the job.
  • Availability to work Full-Time in New London, CT.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with common laboratory procedures and techniques and usage of laboratory equipment such as an inspection microscope, hand held fiber cable tester, OTDR, and an optical power meter/optical loss test set (preferred, but not required).
  • Experience making return loss and multimode launch condition measurements, use of fiber cable assembly test systems, use of an interferometer for inspection of fiber optic connectors, and fiber optic fusion splicing is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Performs product testing and measurements in the fiber optics laboratory.
  • Assists fiber optic engineers in the development of prototypes and models of new designs, using 3D printers or other fabrication prototype part fabrication techniques.
  • Supports fiber optic engineers and CAD designers in product development activities.
  • Conducts engineering studies/investigations. These may include analysis and comparisons of the functional engineering attributes of competitive fiber optic products in the marketplace. Some review of competitive products patents may also be required.
  • Prepare written and verbal reports with some possible presentations to staff level Engineers and Marketing Managers required.
