About The Position

The Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine at Emory University is seeking a Fetal Interventionalist (Maternal–Fetal Surgery Specialist) committed to an academic career in Gynecology & Obstetrics. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor, based on qualifications and experience. The Maternal-Fetal Medicine Division, established over 25 years ago, is one of the first specialty units in the country and provides services at multiple Emory locations. Requirements

  • Completion of a terminal degree (MD or DO)
  • Completion of an ACGME-accredited Obstetrics & Gynecology residency (4 years)
  • Completion of Maternal-Fetal Medicine fellowship training
  • Board Eligible or Board Certified in Obstetrics & Gynecology
  • Licensure with the Georgia Composite Medical Board required prior to employment

Responsibilities

  • Provide consultative services to General Obstetricians in the treatment of obstetric and maternal fetal medicine concerns
  • Evaluate fetal conditions using ultrasound, fetal MRI, and genetic testing
  • Diagnose structural abnormalities, chromosomal conditions, and life-threatening fetal disorders
  • Assess maternal health factors impacting treatment and delivery options
  • Perform minimally invasive fetoscopic surgeries using small cameras and instruments inserted into the uterus
  • Conduct ultrasound-guided procedures such as fetal blood transfusions or shunt placements
  • Perform laser ablation for conditions like twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome
  • In select cases, participate in open fetal surgery where the uterus is temporarily opened to correct severe abnormalities
  • Communicate complex diagnoses clearly and compassionately to patients and Families
  • Discuss potential risks, benefits, ethical considerations, and long-term outcomes for babies with complex prenatal diagnoses
  • Support families in making informed decisions regarding treatment or pregnancy management
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including maternal-fetal medicine specialists, pediatric surgeons, neonatologists, anesthesiologists, nurses, genetic counselors, and social workers
  • Coordinate care plans from diagnosis through delivery and neonatal treatment
  • Supervise sonographers within the clinical practice
  • Participate in patient care, teaching, research, and committee service aligned with academic goals
  • Actively contribute to the educational mission of the department, including: Delivering lectures to fellows, residents, and medical students; Participating in Grand Rounds, M&M Conferences, Journal Club, division meetings, and departmental activities
