About The Position

Under limited supervision, performs highly skilled and specialized work for the Ferry Department. Work involves handling a high capacity large ferryboat; navigating through dense marine traffic including docking and undocking in all weather conditions including low visibility when navigation is done on radar and instruments alone; maintaining a schedule with the vessel; handling the responsibility for all safety, security, and mechanical integrity of all vessels and all Parish docks; responding to 911 calls; handling the responsibility for all radio communications during the assigned shift; handling the responsibility for all lives and property that cross the river on the vessel; and remaining on twenty-four hour call three hundred and sixty-five days per year.

Requirements

• High School or GED diploma
• Master of Steam or Motor vessel of not more than 1600 gross registered ton upon inland or near coastal waters, or a Master of Steam or motor vessel of unlimited gross tons upon inland or oceans
• Radar observer license of rivers or inland or unlimited
• Satisfactory physical condition, including back, vision and hearing
• Current Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC)
• Completion of Section I of “49 CFR Part 40 Drug and Alcohol Testing” Form
• Valid Louisiana Driver’s License with satisfactory records
• Honesty and good moral/ethical behavior
• Ability to report to work on the ferry landing prior to ferry operations
• Proof of military service during covered periods for Veteran Preference
