About The Position

Under general supervision, this position supervises, directs, and coordinates the activities of the Fence Crew engaged in the routine manual labor-intensive tasks necessary to maintain, repair, and install the Tohono O'odham Nation's boundary fence. This includes various maintenance tasks, general knowledge of the exterior boundaries of the Tohono O'odham Nation, light carpentry work, and metal fence framing. The role requires knowledge and sensitivity to Sonoran desert plants, environment, and animals, and involves extended shift scheduling. Work is typically reviewed during progress and upon completion, with occasional spot checks, to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and conformance to established standards. Major work tasks are covered by instructions or procedures.

Requirements

High School Diploma or General Education Diploma.
Five (5) years' work experience in fence construction or related field.
Knowledge of applicable tribal laws and regulations and requirements.
Knowledge of writing, spelling, and some basic math.
Knowledge of safety requirements and practices.
Knowledge of various hand and electrical tools.
Skill in outdoor manual work/tasks.
Skill in providing superior customer service to external and internal customers.
Ability to understand and follow instructions.
Ability to maintain privileged confidential information.
Ability to work extended hours and various work schedules.
Ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.
Ability to communicate verbally efficiently and effectively.
Ability to work independently, organize multiple tasks to meet deadlines.
Ability to exercise independent judgment.
Ability to carry out instructions in verbal or written format.
Ability to travel within the interior/exterior boundaries of the Tohono O'odham Nation.
Upon recommendation for hire, a criminal background check is required to determine suitability for hire, including a 39-month Motor Vehicle Record.
May require possessing and maintaining a valid Arizona driver's license (no DUIs or major traffic citations within the last three years).
If required, must meet the Tohono O'odham Nation tribal employer's insurance requirements to receive a driver's permit to operate program vehicles.
Based on the department's needs, incumbents may be required to demonstrate fluency in both the Tohono O'odham Language and English as a condition of employment.

Responsibilities

Provides leadership and supervision to fence crew.
Observes all safety precautions to prevent injury or damage to self, others, or equipment.
Submits weekly and monthly written reports.
Reviews work process during and upon completion to ensure proper placement of fence line.
Aligns posts, using lines or by sighting and verifies vertical alignment of posts.
Measures, lays out, and marks posthole positions, following instructions, drawings, or specifications.
Digs postholes using spades, posthole diggers, or power-driven augers.
Stretches wire, wire mesh, or chain link fencing between posts, and attaches to fencing frames.
Orders and delivers fencing materials to project locations.
Maintains inventory to complete projects.
Mixes and pours posthole concrete.
Performs maintenance and repair on the Nation's boundary fence line.
Performs other duties as assigned.
