About The Position

APM Reports seeks ambitious self-starters ready to dig deep through research, sources, and data. As the Investigative Fellow for APM Reports, you'll contribute to our national investigative podcasts and get the opportunity to do shorter-form reporting for MPR News. You'll get hands-on experience across podcasts, audio, digital articles, video and social media. We’ll help you file public records requests, level up your audio production skills and explore the ways that artificial intelligence can be applied to investigative journalism. You'll sit in on table reads, join group edits, and take part in every stage of our editorial process. Collaboration drives everything we do. We pride ourselves on nurturing the next generation of investigative reporters and want to help develop your passion for investigative journalism. If you have an insatiable curiosity, persistence to keep digging, and drive to uncover the truth, this fellowship is for you. The goal of this fellowship is to provide you with immersive learning and real-world experience through impactful work. By the end of your fellowship, you will be able to: Level up audio editing skills, Improve writing for the ear, Hone investigative reporting skills.

Requirements

  • Completed bachelor's degree, or at least two years of relevant professional experience in journalism or communications
  • Two years of relevant professional experience in journalism or communications
  • Available full-time (40 hours/week, Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.) throughout the fellowship
  • Reporting experience
  • Demonstrated interest in audio
  • Demonstrated interest in investigative journalism

Responsibilities

  • Have the opportunity to pitch stories and investigations
  • Explore data journalism, including applying artificial intelligence to it
  • Learn how to pry information out of the government using public records requests
  • Perform research at high level and possess the ability to clearly and accurately organize, distill and convey information
  • Gather and edit audio in ProTools
  • Learn about presenting stories across a multitude of platforms, including podcasts, radio, video, digital, data visualizations and newsletters
