About The Position

The Exercise Physiology Core Lab in the School of Medicine is seeking a federal work study undergraduate student wage employee to support day-to-day operations of the lab, including study preparation, equipment maintenance, and assistance with human subject testing sessions. This position is well suited for students interested in exercise physiology, kinesiology, or related health sciences seeking hands-on laboratory experience.

  • Current UVA undergraduate student
  • Federal Work Study eligible

Nice To Haves

  • Reliable, detail-oriented, and able to follow standardized procedures
  • Current certification in BLS
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Availability to work flexible hours, including some early morning or late afternoon sessions, based on study scheduling needs

Responsibilities

  • Set up and break down lab space and equipment for scheduled studies
  • Calibrate testing equipment prior to sessions (e.g., metabolic carts, ergometers)
  • Clean and sanitize lab space and equipment after each study session
  • Assist research staff with exercise test measures, resting metabolism tests, and Bod Pod (air displacement plethysmography) assessments
  • Assist with supervised exercise training sessions for study participants
  • Sterilize metabolic masks and related equipment using the autoclave
  • Complete testing forms accurately and in a timely manner
  • Update and maintain subject-facing forms and handouts as requested by lab staff
  • Monitor and restock lab supplies as needed
  • Order linens and other consumable supplies for testing sessions
  • Communicate proactively and promptly with the supervisor regarding scheduling and availability
