This role is responsible for performing detailed research and analysis of Sub-Ledger and General Ledger (GL) activity to support audit readiness and financial compliance. The consultant will identify audit issues, conduct root-cause analysis, recommend corrective actions, and support or perform their implementation. This position requires close coordination with auditors, financial managers, and operational stakeholders to ensure accurate, compliant, and auditable financial records. The role involves research, analysis, and communication at the direction of project leads and clients, utilizing data analysis technology, and providing financial reporting and remediation solutions. A key responsibility is supporting the review of Notifications of Findings and Recommendations (NFRs), including receiving, assessing accuracy, identifying root causes, documenting investigations, and recommending modifications or corrective action plans (CAPs). The consultant will also review and update CAPs for open and reissued NFRs, developing actionable milestones aligned with the Audit Roadmap. Excellent writing and communication skills are essential for drafting and updating Standard Operating Procedures, Desktop Guides, and whitepapers. Strong customer service skills and the ability to work under pressure with short deadlines are also required. The role includes directing and reviewing the work of Senior Associates and communicating project status to the Team Lead and client.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of relevant experience
  • Strong understanding of accounting principles, internal controls, and audit processes
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze complex financial data and identify root causes
  • Minimum 2-3 days per week on-site requirement (Alexandria, VA)
  • BA/BS degree from an accredited college/university in Accounting or Business Administration with a major in Accounting
  • Must have an Active DoD Secret Security Clearance (requires U.S. Citizenship)

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with the Federal Government and/or DoW clients
  • Experience in federal/DoD financial statement auditing, audit remediation, and audit readiness
  • Experience with financial reporting processes, financial statement compilation, and federal reporting requirements
  • Experience researching and applying FASAB, OMB, and Treasury requirements including OMB Circular A-136, and/or the Treasury Financial Manual (TFM)
  • Experience working with DFAS reporting policy and procedures
  • One of the following professional certifications: CPA, CISA, CIA, CGFM or CDFM
  • Proficient skills in MS Excel
  • Experience with SharePoint, Oracle, ACL Analytics, PowerBI, and/or Access databases

Responsibilities

  • Supporting the Department of the Navy (DON) audit response, audit remediation, internal controls, financial processes, and/or accounting in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), Statements of Federal Financial Accounting Standards (SFFAS), and/or relevant Department of the Treasury and Office of Management and Budget (OMB) policies
  • Managing the day-to-day research, analysis, and communication at the direction of project leads and client
  • Utilizing data analysis technology to analyze information
  • Analyze information and provide financial reporting and related remediation solutions
  • Support the review of draft and new Notifications of Findings and Recommendations (NFR), to include receiving NFRs, review and assess for accuracy, look for root causes, document investigation, and provide recommendations to either modify the draft finding or develop and implement corrective action plans (CAP) for final findings
  • Review and update, as necessary, CAPs for open and reissued NFRs. Develop actionable milestones with due dates that align with the Audit Roadmap
  • Demonstrating excellent writing and communication skills as significant time is spent drafting/updating communication artifacts (e.g., Standard Operating Procedures, Desktop Guides, whitepapers)
  • Demonstrating strong customer service skills and the ability to work in occasional high-pressure situations with short deadlines
  • Directing and reviewing the work of Senior Associates
  • Communicating status of project-related tasks to Team Lead and client
