About The Position

DIS-TRAN Packaged Substations, an industry leader in high-voltage substations since 1965, is seeking a Factory-Built Substation (FBS) Field Technician to join their Project Support Services (PSS) team. This role is crucial for supporting FBS installations from planning through commissioning, acting as the main technical point of contact between DIS-TRAN, customers, contractors, and internal departments. The technician ensures safe, efficient, and successful installations by providing pre-installation planning, on-site support, inspections, training, and feedback. When not traveling, the technician manages the field-to-factory feedback loop, prepares for upcoming installations, documents field issues and lessons learned, maintains installation standards, and shares field knowledge internally. Success requires strong mechanical aptitude, problem-solving skills, excellent communication, and relationship-building abilities.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products, including Outlook, Word, and Excel.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience with DIS-TRAN Packaged Substations (DTPS).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of DTPS operations, processes, and organizational structure.
  • Proven ability to work effectively across departments and with employees at various levels of the organization.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Demonstrated reliability, professionalism, and sound judgment.
  • Ability to work independently while also collaborating effectively as part of a team.

Responsibilities

  • Review assigned projects with the Project Manager to understand scope, site conditions, and installation requirements.
  • Prepare customer installation packets, including drawings and project documentation.
  • Participate in logistics planning meetings to coordinate shipment schedules and installation readiness.
  • Develop, maintain, and facilitate completion of pre-construction checklists.
  • Schedule and facilitate pre-construction meetings, document action items, and follow up with stakeholders.
  • Collect stakeholder contact information and coordinate meeting invitations.
  • Lead pre-construction meetings, verify checklist items, and distribute meeting recaps.
  • Review route studies, construction drawings, installation sequencing, and required offloading equipment.
  • Assess site readiness and project schedule/installation expectations.
  • Travel to customer job sites to support Factory-Built Substation installations.
  • Inspect DTPS products for shipping damage, shortages, or discrepancies.
  • Provide technical support to customers and contractors by explaining drawings, interpreting procedures, answering questions, and troubleshooting issues.
  • Identify, troubleshoot, and coordinate resolution of field issues involving damaged equipment, missing materials, incorrect components, fabrication discrepancies, or installation conflicts.
  • Coordinate with Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, and Project Management to develop timely solutions.
  • Obtain installation photos and videos for field reports and lessons-learned documentation.
  • Develop and maintain an installation checklist and lead its completion and review onsite.
  • Complete comprehensive field reports documenting installation successes, challenges, issues, and corrective actions.
  • Meet monthly with the Director of Quality Assurance to review field observations and identify improvement opportunities.
  • Analyze recurring installation issues and field observations to identify trends impacting various departments and coordinate follow-up actions.
  • Schedule and facilitate meetings with internal teams to review field issues and lessons learned, identify improvement opportunities, and coordinate action items.
  • Develop and deliver lessons-learned presentations to internal teams highlighting field observations, common issues, lessons learned, best practices, and project photos/videos.
  • When not traveling, review upcoming FBS projects, delivery schedules, and installation dates.
  • Proactively identify and complete readiness activities before mobilization, including planning and booking travel.
  • Review construction and installation drawings, installation sequencing, shipping configuration, offloading requirements, required equipment and tooling, site-readiness requirements, customer/contractor responsibilities, project-specific risks, and lessons learned.
  • Maintain the FBS Field Issues & Lessons Learned Log, document and analyze field observations, communicate findings, coordinate follow-up, and track action items.
  • Create and organize field records following each installation.
  • Own and continuously improve installation-focused standards and field-use documentation.
  • Develop lessons-learned content using field examples, photos, and videos.
  • Transfer field knowledge through meetings, training, and reusable reference materials.
  • Independently work established non-travel priorities and escalate issues to the Production Manager.
  • Coordinate with other departments as needed to provide field information and track follow-up.
