About The Position

The Farrowing Lead is responsible for leading and developing the farrowing team, ensuring all production protocols and procedures are followed, and maximizing sow production and efficiencies. This role involves training employees in animal husbandry, production paperwork, bio-security, and safety procedures. The Farrowing Lead also communicates effectively with employees and farm management, ensures accurate and timely completion of paperwork, maintains a safe working environment, oversees ventilation controls, and manages facility maintenance. Marginal functions include other duties as assigned by farm management.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED Preferred
  • 2+ Years Livestock Experience with High School Diploma Preferred
  • My Pipestone New Hire Courses (Introduction, Animal Welfare, Biosecurity, Employee Handbook, PQA, Safety)
  • Additional Position Related My Pipestone Assigned
  • Monthly Animal Welfare, Biosecurity and Safety Topics (combined)
  • Annual Safety Refresher Training
  • Standing, walking and ability to be on feet 8 to 10 hours per day
  • Frequent bending, reaching, squatting and kneeling
  • Frequent use of one or both hands/arms to grasp or pull
  • Frequent lifting of objects weighing 3-20 pounds
  • Occasional bending while pulling and/or lifting objects weighing up to 50 pounds, or requiring up to 50 pounds of force to move
  • Occasional bending while pulling and/or lifting objects weighing up to 100 pounds or requiring up to 100 pounds of force to move with the assistance of another person as needed
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Must be able to print and/or write legibly
  • Must be able to work weekends
  • Must have reliable method of transportation to get to work

Responsibilities

  • Lead and develop farrowing team
  • Train farrowing employees to follow all production protocols and procedures
  • Monitor employee performance versus protocols to maximize sow production & efficiencies
  • Develop area employees to provide specialized skills necessary for smooth work flow
  • Train farrowing employees in animal husbandry to reduce stress of herd and maximize production
  • Maximize the daily tasks of the department to achieve production targets
  • Complete area paperwork accurately and timely; train farrowing employees in required production paperwork and monitor employee activity for accuracy
  • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with area employees and farm management
  • Utilize task sheets and time frames to maintain an organized workday
  • Utilize consistent monitoring of task schedules for both yourself and farrowing area employees
  • Give daily input to farm management on production, animal health, and farrowing employee issues
  • Train farrowing employees on how their personal performance affects the finances of the organization
  • Ensure farrowing paperwork is completed accurately and on time
  • Work with farm management to ensure completion of all work related injury paperwork and participate as necessary in accident investigation
  • Daily recording of monitored production items
  • Ensure employees are properly trained on how to complete paperwork in the farrowing area. Submit production records and corrections on time
  • Adhere to all bio-security protocols, train farrowing staff on bio-security and monitor employee activity for compliance
  • Ensure farrowing area bio-security audit deficiencies are corrected and brought into compliance in a timely basis
  • Follow all safety procedures and guidelines
  • Teach farrowing area employees safety procedures and monitor employee activity for compliance
  • Ensure all safety equipment is in place and utilized
  • Learn accident prevention measures for farrowing area, train farrowing employees and monitor employee activity for compliance
  • Consistently monitor animal welfare procedures in farrowing area
  • Monitor and ensure farrowing area ventilation system is in good working order
  • Regularly monitor the environment to achieve optimum comfort for the animals
  • Train farrowing area employees to provide regular input to maintain optimum comfort for animals
  • The facility must be maintained and well kept
  • Train and direct farrowing staff to complete routine maintenance on a daily basis
  • Communicate non-routine repairs to farm management
  • Train, direct and monitor staff to keep farrowing area clean and organized
  • Other duties and projects as assigned by farm management
