About The Position

As a Farmer 2 supporting Knott Dairy for the department of Animal Sciences, you will complete tasks involving care and feeding of livestock, along with maintenance and upkeep of animal housing facilities and pastures. This involves safely operating and maintaining farm equipment such as tractors, trucks, skid steers, loaders, forage choppers, bedding blowers, and other farm implements. You will assist in facilities maintenance by building and or maintaining fencing, facilities, pens, feeding and hauling devices, and ensuring grounds are kept clean. In this role, you may lead or supervise lower level staff when needed.

Requirements

  • Two years of experience in farm work or maintaining livestock; OR equivalent education/experience
  • Prior husbandry experience with livestock and working with animals
  • Experience safely and efficiently operating and maintaining farm equipment, including tractors, skid steers, trucks, implements, etc.
  • Must have, or be able to obtain by time of hire, a valid driver’s license and meet requirements in accordance with SPPM 7.10 and departmental driving standards
  • Must be able to work a rotating schedule that could include weekends, after hours, and holidays as needed and directed by supervisor
  • This is an essential position, and the employee will be expected to report to work under conditions that other employees are not required to report to work during, such as inclement weather and during Washington State University (WSU) suspended operations.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with livestock breeding including: heat detection, artificial insemination (AI) and calving
  • Experience with milking, vaccinations, foot trimming, dehorning, ear tagging, tattooing, freeze branding
  • Ability to drive manual transmission
