About The Position

Under the direction of the Assistant Director of Facilities and Grounds Supervisor, the objective of the farm supervisor position is to effectively manage all farm operations, including overseeing staff, ensuring productivity and efficiency, implementing sustainable practices, and meeting production goals. The farm supervisor is responsible for planning, organizing, and coordinating activities to ensure the success and profitability of the farm. This role also involves instructing youth in a skilled trade to prepare them for employment upon discharge, planning and conducting on-the-job training activities, and ensuring the proper and safe care of work areas and equipment. The position requires adherence to all rules, regulations, policies, and safety standards of The William George Agency and the New York State Office of Children and Family Services.

Requirements

AAS or equivalent (copy required upon hire)
3-5 years of experience in building and facilities maintenance
Valid NYS Driver’s License (copy required upon hire)

Extensive knowledge of crop production, livestock, and agricultural machinery.
Understanding of soil health, irrigation systems, and pest control methods.
Familiarity with budgeting, financial planning, and record-keeping.
Ability to oversee day-to-day operations and make strategic decisions for the farm.
Experience in managing a team of agricultural workers and ensuring their training and development.
Knowledge of sustainability practices and environmental regulations in agriculture.
Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to adapt to changing conditions in the agricultural industry.
Analyze problems and offer alternative solutions.
Demonstrated leadership and management skills.
Ability to operate different types of machinery, tools, and equipment.
Ability to read and interpret plans and technical manuals.
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Interpret, apply, and explain rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
Work independently and meet schedules and timelines.
Direct the maintenance of a variety of reports and files related to assigned activities.
Interpret plans and specifications.
Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
Understand other NYS Agriculture code issues and work with the dept. of agriculture.
Must successfully complete all required background checks: NYS Statewide Central Register of Child Abuse and Maltreatment (SCR), Multi-State Sex Offender Registry (SOR), NYS Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) fingerprinting, NYS Justice Center Staff Exclusion List (SEL), NYS OMIG Medicaid Exclusion List, Out-of-state child abuse register inquiry of any state in which the person resided within the last five years (if applicable), NYS License Event Notification Service (LENS), Office of Inspector General (OIG).
Must successfully complete Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI).

Responsibilities

Oversee the day-to-day operations of the farm, including planting, cultivating, and harvesting crops.
Manage greenhouse operations, including monitoring environmental conditions and implementing pest control measures.
Develop and implement crop production plans to ensure maximum yield and quality.
Oversee and perform fieldwork.
Supervise farm workers and vocational students and guide proper planting and harvesting techniques.
Monitor inventory levels and order supplies as needed.
Ensure compliance with safety regulations and best agricultural practices.
Manage operations of all new and existing apple orchards.
Care and management of Greenhouse (all seasons); prune, move, and handle general plant care.
Grow plants for the Agency buildings and grounds; care for and maintain tools, supplies, and equipment entrusted to the horticulture program; stress safety and economical use of equipment and supplies.
Maintain nursery stock – this includes watering, moving stock around the yard, maintaining the nursery stock, and other duties as assigned.
Continuously improve shop operations through process improvement initiatives.
Provide leadership and guidance to farm employees, fostering a positive and productive work environment.
Provide regular reports on farm operations and performance.
Assess the youth’s interests and knowledge of the Vocational Program specific to your trade area.
Instructs youth in a skilled trade to prepare them for employment upon discharge.
Plan and conduct on-the-job training activities for a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and work time that provides youth with opportunities to observe, question, and participate in.
Instruct youth in the proper and safe care of work areas and all applicable equipment; stress safety at all times.
Be prepared and in a position to begin work following the Vocational Program time schedules; ensure that assigned youth are properly supervised at all times and maintain attendance and work schedule records.
Enforce established dress, conduct, and behavior codes appropriate to the Vocational Program area.
Communicate and document significant behaviors or incidents on behalf of youth.
Maintain all trade-related, Vocational Program, and youth records and paperwork in a timely, organized way.
Assess the residents' interests and knowledge of the groundskeeper’s program.
Instruct, supervise, and work with residents in the groundkeeper’s program.
