About The Position

This position leads land preparation, field setup, and season-end crop termination. It involves ensuring the calibration and maintenance of spray equipment, supervising farm crews during crop maintenance, and overseeing crop production including pest control, fertilizer application, irrigation, and crop maintenance. The role also assists with coordinating with labs for successful harvest of research crops. Additionally, it implements maintenance programs for farm and irrigation equipment, provides guidance on routine repair and maintenance of irrigation systems, and coordinates cleaning of equipment and work areas to ensure sanitary conditions. The position is responsible for the cleanliness, orderliness, and maintenance of all work and storage areas. It involves consulting with research staff in planning crop production and research activities, and maintaining Center records and reports regarding farm conditions, machinery, and other operational issues. The role includes conducting hiring, training, and supervision of OPS and new Ag Assistant I and II members of the farm crew, and training interns on tractor safety, operation, and calibration of spray equipment. It also provides support for field days and farm tours. Other duties may be assigned, such as assisting with center events and being on call for center emergencies at all hours.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent and three years of experience working on an agricultural operation, including supervision of others.
  • Appropriate college coursework or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required years of experience.
  • Pesticide license.

  • 5-7 years experience working on an IFAS REC center agricultural field.

Responsibilities

  • Leads land preparation including disking, harrowing, levelling and set up of fields using GPS systems.
  • Field set up including fumigation, laying plastic mulch, installation of irrigation equipment.
  • Season-end crop termination, removal of plastic mulch, twine and planting cover crops.
  • Ensures calibration and maintenance of spray equipment.
  • Supervise farm crews during crop maintenance operations and ensure they are trained to fulfill tasks.
  • Oversight of crop production including pest control, fertilizer application, irrigation, and crop maintenance.
  • Assists with the coordination with labs to ensure the successful harvest of research crops.
  • Implements maintenance programs for farm and irrigation equipment.
  • Provide guidance on routine repair and maintenance of the irrigation systems.
  • Coordinate all cleaning of equipment and work areas to ensure sanitary conditions.
  • Responsible for cleanliness, orderliness and maintenance of all work and storage areas.
