About The Position

The Virginia Department of Correction’s (VADOC) Agribusiness Unit is charged with providing agricultural training opportunities to inmates to enhance re-entry and reduce recidivism, while reducing food cost for the Virginia Department of Corrections (DOC). To provide security, training, and safety of inmates in the direction of farm operation and to assist the B&G Department in accomplishing maintenance services as instructed by the supervisor. Train and supervise offender labor in all aspects of farm and livestock (handling and feeding) planning daily work assignments. General knowledge of livestock and vegetable production.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of all types of farm work, farm machinery, and ground maintenance equipment.
  • Skill to use equipment and machinery safety
  • knowledge of small engines, and ability to perform minor repairs on equipment used.
  • Must have Virginia Commercial Pesticide license or obtain within 12 months for new hire and existing supervisors in the areas of application.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with workers with varied backgrounds.

Nice To Haves

  • Agricultural, construction or equipment experience.
  • Possession of Commercial Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one preferred.
