About The Position

This position is located at Marion Correctional Institution in Marion, NC (McDowell County). Marion Correctional Institution is a close custody male facility. Work in this class involves first-line supervision to Correctional Officer III’s in close-custody institutions with restrictive and controlled housing. Positions assign lower-level custody staff to a particular area or post. Employees oversee officer activities and performance and ensure that the custody, security and welfare of inmates is maintained. Employees arrange work schedules to ensure shift coverage, implement operational procedures and ensure rules and regulations are followed according to policy. Employees at this level supervise more staff than recognized in the lower-level Correctional Sergeant I or II. Positions report directly to a Correctional Lieutenant III and/or the Correctional Housing Unit Manager.

Requirements

  • High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and three years of experience as a Correctional Officer, or two years of experience as a Correctional Officer III; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be eligible for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education and Training and Standards Commission.

  • Documented knowledge of disciplinary procedures and techniques appropriate for persons under criminal confinement.

Responsibilities

  • Assign posts, direct subordinate staff, and develop/manage schedules in coordination with other supervisors to ensure safe, secure, and efficient facility operations with adequate shift coverage.
  • Conduct regular staff briefings to communicate expectations, policy updates, and critical operational information.
  • Oversee offender counts, ensuring all individuals are accurately accounted for and their well-being is monitored.
  • Direct and conduct searches for contraband to uphold facility safety and enforce offender discipline in accordance with policy.
  • Monitor and control offender movement to maintain order, security, and safety within the facility.
  • Respond to and lead staff during emergency situations, including disturbances, fires, or other critical incidents, ensuring appropriate resolution.
  • Prepare and review incident and disciplinary reports, including recommending employee discipline, when necessary, in accordance with policy.
  • Conduct annual performance evaluations, address performance issues, and ensure proper documentation of corrective actions.
