About The Position

This position is located at Marion Correctional Institution in Marion, NC (McDowell County). Marion Correctional Institution is a close custody male facility. Work in this class involves first-line supervision to Correctional Officer I’s in minimum-custody facilities, increasing the custody and security coverage. Positions assign lower-level custody staff to a particular area or post. Employees oversee officer activities and performance and ensure that the custody, security and welfare of inmates is maintained. Employees arrange work schedules to ensure shift coverage, implement operational procedures and ensure rules and regulations are followed according to policy. Positions may at times be the highest-ranking custody staff on the grounds or the Officer-in-Charge (OIC). Positions report to a Correctional Lieutenant I and/or a Correctional Assistant Superintendent.

Requirements

  • High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of experience as a correctional officer; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
  • Applicants must pass a background check to be eligible for this job.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a first-line supervisor overseeing a team of correctional officers and directing daily operations.
  • Ensure all disciplinary actions and incident reports are completed accurately and within required timeframes.
  • Conduct daily inspections of control rooms and review logs to maintain compliance with security procedures.
  • Maintain and monitor employee timesheets and overtime reports for accuracy and accountability.
  • Ensure staff adherence to established policies, procedures, and assigned post orders.
  • Maintain continuous accountability of offenders by monitoring movement and location at all times.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate and timely narratives and related documentation.
  • Promote a positive and professional work environment by supporting staff and addressing operational needs effectively.
