About The Position

The Family Support Specialist (FSS) is responsible for working in home and community-based settings with families and children of all ages. The FSS’s primary role is to provide education, support, and service coordination. This role involves a significant amount of direct service provision, with at least 50% of time spent assisting clients in acquiring parenting and life skills. The position also requires meticulous record-keeping, including progress notes, assessments, service plans, and discharge summaries. Collaboration with other agencies and service providers is essential for advocating on behalf of clients and linking families to necessary resources. The role also includes facilitating support groups, developing informal support systems for families, and collecting data for quality improvement. Flexibility in work schedule, including evening and weekend work, is necessary. The FSS is expected to foster a team atmosphere and represent the agency positively in the community. Additional duties include planning and executing workshops and trainings.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in social work or related field. Lived experience may be considered in lieu of degree.
  • A minimum of one year’s experience in Human Services preferred.
  • Minimum age of 21 years.
  • Basic computer skills, including ability to effectively use an electronic client and other databases.
  • Required knowledge of and skills in: The child welfare system, The needs of neglected, abused, and exploited children and adults, Family functioning, and Child development.
  • Ability to work autonomously and make appropriate decisions in crisis situations.
  • Strong verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Own transportation that meets agency vehicle inspection requirements.
  • Valid driver’s license with no more than 6 points.
  • Proof of insurance that meets agency requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Provide home-, school-, and/or community-based education and support to assist clients in acquiring parenting and/or life skills with a minimum of 50% of time spent in direct service provision.
  • Complete progress notes, assessments, service plans, and discharge summaries in accordance with agency protocol and referral source requirements.
  • Facilitate educational and/or support groups as required.
  • Participate in team meetings and coordinate with other agencies and service providers (e.g., case managers and foster care specialists) to advocate on behalf of clients.
  • Provide referrals and assist with linking families to necessary resources.
  • Assist families in the development of informal support systems.
  • Collect statistics and implement quality improvement procedures as defined by program assignment.
  • Drive to and from appointments.
  • Participate in supervision sessions as required.
  • Complete training necessary to perform position.
  • Show flexibility regarding work schedule (to be determined by supervisor).
  • Evening and weekend work is required.
  • Facilitate a team atmosphere by working in partnership with other agency staff.
  • Represent the agency and programs in a positive manner to clients, community organizations, and the public in general.
  • Plan, organize and execute parenting workshops, car seat education, and other trainings as assigned.
  • Other tasks as assigned.
