About The Position

The City of Richmond Department of Social Services is seeking a highly qualified candidate for the position of Family Services Specialist III in the Child Protective Services Unit. The incumbent will be responsible for providing intermediate level office support to the Child Protective Services social work team performing duties. Duties include but are not limited to Providing direct intervention services to individuals and/or families in Child Protective Services cases; casework coordination/management; Providing assistance to customers with utilizing community resources; Investigating, managing, and monitoring complex and high-profile cases, including out-of-family investigations, sexual abuse, physical injury/neglect, fatalities; Monitoring progress/compliance with court orders to ensure safety of children; Functioning as lead worker or backup to the Family Service Supervisor, assigning cases to CPS workers, approving cases/findings, and providing case consultation; Supervising special projects, programs, and/or a limited number of social work student interns; Assisting with training of new hires, professional and community groups; Performing community outreach and coordinating CPS in-service training for community partners; Representing the program on local and state committees; Working on-call duty on a rotating basis; Performing other related duties as required. City of Richmond Department of Social Services employees are considered essential personnel and may be required to work during times of declared emergencies.

Requirements

  • Considerable knowledge in Social Services programs; principles and practices in the human services field, including knowledge of programs, social-economic trends, and behaviors that impact the delivery of human services; agency administration policy and administering individual and family assessments and interpreting results.
  • Demonstrated skills in case management; consulting and advising; interpersonal communication; oral/written communication; effective listening; and formulating, interpreting, or implementing policies or operating procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability to think critically; make sound judgement; work with diverse population; perform job responsibilities effectively with minimal supervision; prioritize and manage time effectively.
  • Bachelor's degree in a Human Services field OR minimum of a Bachelor's degree in any field with a minimum of two years of appropriate and related experience in a Human Services area (Section 22VAC40-670-20 of the Administrative Code of Virginia).
  • Two or more years of experience in assigned program area and completion of required training programs or equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities
  • Valid Commonwealth of Virginia Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record.

Nice To Haves

  • Child Protective Services Certification from Virginia or another state is preferred.
  • Possession of a BSW or MSW degree and a Commonwealth of Virginia Social Worker license are preferred.
