About The Position

The Family Partner role involves providing support and advocacy for families, particularly those with children experiencing serious emotional disturbances. This role requires utilizing lived/living experience to coach and mentor families, connect them with resources, and ensure their voice is heard within various systems such as mental health, child welfare, and juvenile justice. The position also involves participating in agency-wide meetings, contributing to program development, and supporting staff training and hiring processes. There are multiple levels within this role (Family Partner I, II, and III), with increasing responsibilities and experience requirements for higher levels.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Experience as a parent or caregiver of a child with a serious emotional disturbance receiving, or having previously received, services within the public systems, including: mental health, child welfare, or juvenile justice required.
  • Basic knowledge of Public Mental Health/Child Welfare/Education systems, and the ability to advocate on behalf of clients in navigating and negotiating those systems.
  • Meets minimum qualification listed above (Family Partner I).
  • Meets all minimum qualifications for Family Partner I AND has obtained Medi-Cal Peer Support Specialist Certification (Family Partner II).
  • Meets all minimum qualifications for Family Partner I AND has a minimum of 1 year experience as a Family Partner (Family Partner II).
  • Meets all qualifications for Family Partner II AND has a minimum of 2 years’ experience as a Peer Advocate (Family Partner III).

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience with advocacy, outreach, and community resources, preferred.
  • Spanish Speaking Preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in the client intake process, ensuring families are aware of advocacy and support services.
  • Coach and educate families (parents, caregivers, and youth) to improve communication, system navigation, and self-regulation skills.
  • Participate in Child and Family Team (CFT) meetings in homes or the community to assess strengths and challenges, provide parenting support, inform about services, and link to community resources.
  • Offer ongoing education and support groups for families with similar challenges.
  • Participate in Family and Youth Partnership Wellness and Position Specific Groups using lived/living experience for personal wellness, connection, and support.
  • Participate in agency-wide program meetings, family team meetings, and management decisions, providing perspectives on child and family strengths, parents as partners, and agency service delivery.
  • Provide ongoing feedback and training to staff on the importance of family voice, choice, and cultural sensitivity.
  • Participate in the interview process for potential employees, assessing candidates' ability to provide family-sensitive services.
  • Participate in community trainings, workgroups, planning committees, client treatment reviews, and task forces related to children’s mental health, advocacy, and policy development.
  • Assist parents, caregivers, and youth with the grievance and complaint process, including mentoring, coaching, and providing technical assistance.
  • Provide collateral support to caregivers and parents as assigned by the Family Partner Manager.
  • Coach and educate other team members to develop skills aligned with agency culture and practices (Family Partner III).
  • Attend Leadership meetings, participate in the development, implementation, and monitoring of program initiatives, team engagement, and professional culture (Family Partner III).
  • Facilitate trainings and FYP initiatives as directed by leadership (Family Partner III).
  • Perform all duties in a manner consistent with agency principles, values, ethics, policies, and regulations.
  • Model and communicate positive attitudes toward the agency’s Mission, Vision, and Values.
  • Work collaboratively with all agency programs and staff.
  • Utilize and maintain Microsoft Outlook calendar for time management and sharing information.
  • Participate in ongoing training to expand and develop professional skills.
  • Perform other duties as necessary for the agency.
