About The Position

Shrub Oak International School (SOIS) is a therapeutic day and residential school for autistic children, adolescents, and young adults with complex co-occurring conditions. Located in northern Westchester County, Shrub Oak offers unparalleled educational opportunities for autistic students in a family-centric, supportive environment. We are a residential school located on a scenic 127-acre campus which includes multiple buildings and a working farm for student programming. Requirements

  • Master’s degree (MSN) from an accredited program.
  • Active RN licensure in NYS is required.
  • 3+ years of experience working as a Family Nurse Practitioner is required.
  • Valid driver’s license with the ability to pass a DMV driving abstract screening is required.
  • Experience working with children and adolescents with disabilities is required.
  • Must be able to pass TCIS (Therapeutic Crisis Intervention Training for Schools).
  • You must be able to ambulate around the campus, including hills, stairs, grass and gravel.
  • Must be able to react and move quickly during student crisis, both for the safety of the student and for the staff.
  • Must be able to run across the campus and throughout the school to catch/monitor an eloping student, and/or to remove yourself from an unsafe situation.
  • You must be able to bend, stretch, sit, stand, crouch or kneel for sustained periods of time if implementing a hold.

Nice To Haves

  • Family Nursing board-certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner with prescriptive privilege is preferred
  • knowledge of psychopharmacology and medication management required.
  • NYS Education Dept registration as a Family NP is preferred
  • 5 or more years of experience is preferred.
  • 2+ years working with the autistic population is preferred
  • boarding school environment experience is preferred.
  • Experience handling complex medical, emotional, and psychological situations with a holistic approach toward achieving sustained improvement, well-being, and regulation.
  • Previous participation in research, training, or professional development activities related to child and adolescent psychiatry or special education.

Responsibilities

  • Provide primary and urgent care services to students within the residential treatment setting. Recording medical histories and symptoms and any other follow up and/or ongoing coordination that is required relative to ensuring immediate and consistent care utilizing best practice.
  • Ownership of the diagnosis of health issues, administering and oversight of patient care plans, and medical tests.
  • Directly prescribes and administers medication with general overnight of medicine administration and other treatments in accordance with best practices.
  • Consult and collaborate with facility dining team to ensure adherence to specialized dietary requirements plans.
  • Consulting and collaborating with healthcare professionals (internally and externally) and families relative to medical care of students ensuring a complete and best in class medical treatment for students.
  • Provide on-call (off-hours) medical support to manage crisis and medical emergencies and ensure appropriate follow-up care as needed.
  • Work in partnership with the nurses to ensure timely scheduling and completion of specialty appointments.
  • Transport students in a company vehicle to appointments as needed is required.
  • Communicate effectively with parents and/or guardians regarding students’ overall medical needs and treatment updates; providing training to students and their families to manage ongoing treatment for care at home as needed.
  • Disseminate relevant medical information to school staff and parents and/or guardians as appropriate while maintaining confidentiality and compliance with HIPAA regulations
