As a Family Liaison, you provide compassionate support to patients’ families and caregivers throughout the end-of-life process. You facilitate the completion and signing of required documentation, including death certificates and autopsy consent forms, and help ensure compliance with Cuyahoga County Coroner criteria and applicable government regulations. You also identify potential organ donation candidates and report them to LifeBanc, the local organ procurement organization, which determines eligibility and coordinates the consent process. Working collaboratively with Nursing, Administrative Services and Pastoral Care, you help guide families through important decisions and processes during difficult times. You also provide education, resources, and informational materials to individuals and families on topics related to medical research and total body donation.

Requirements

  • Degree in Nursing, Respiratory Therapy, or EMT-P
  • Three (3) years of clinical experience in an acute care setting

Nice To Haves

  • Licensure as Registered Nurse (RN), Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), Registered Respiratory Technologist (RRT), or Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic (EMT-P) in the current State

Responsibilities

  • Assess needs of family/significant others during end of life or immediate period after death of patient.
  • Assist with contacting clergy, social work, funeral home, etc.
  • Serve as a liaison between families and professional staff including contacting support services such as funeral homes, coroner's office, as necessary.
  • Serve as a liaison to local procurement agencies in accordance with regulatory requirements and complete all appropriate documentation, including facilitation of recovery efforts regarding organ, tissue, eye or total body donation when indicated.
  • Provides necessary medical and demographic information in a timely manner.
  • Assess educational needs and provides educational material to families and staff concerning organ, tissue, and eye donation, medical research, and total body donation.
  • Arrange for funeral/cremation of stillborn, as requested by family.
  • Identify performance improvement opportunities and adhere to the required standards of regulatory agencies.
  • Communicate with other departments (e.g., Nursing, Pathology, Ombudsman, etc.) to identify potential or actual areas of concern.
  • Utilize hospital resources in a cost-effective manner. Maintains awareness of throughput initiatives.
  • Other duties as assigned.
