About The Position

The on-call Family Advocate role is for individuals who are compassionate, flexible, and can provide steady support to families experiencing homelessness. This role is crucial for keeping the shelter running smoothly, ensuring families feel calm and supported, and maintaining hope. The position involves stepping into critical moments to assist families in rebuilding stability. The schedule is flexible, allowing advocates to choose their shifts, with potential for growth into part-time or full-time roles based on operational needs and demonstrated reliability, curiosity, and commitment. Requirements

  • At least one year working with families or individuals experiencing homelessness, housing instability, or crisis — paid or volunteer. Lived experience is valued.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Human Services, or a related field preferred but not required; equivalent experience welcome.
  • Strong communication, emotional intelligence, multitasking with confidence, calm under pressure, sound judgment, problem-solving, time management, reliable follow-through, and the ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Comfortable with Google Suite, Slack, and basic data entry.
  • A valid driver’s license is required; transporting families may be part of your work.
  • Ability to clearly document case notes and communicate effectively in English.

Responsibilities

  • Offer a safe, friendly, respectful atmosphere for guest families, volunteers, and partners.
  • Provide compassionate listening, emotional support, and practical guidance to help families access services, resources, and case management.
  • Support daily tasks such as meal coordination, cleaning, laundry, and inventory to keep the shelter running smoothly.
  • Guide volunteers, interns, and team members with calm, supportive leadership and consistent adherence to protocols.
  • Keep accurate records and communicate updates clearly through internal tools like Slack and Google Suite.
  • Monitor shelter activities, uphold safety procedures, and respond confidently in emergencies.
  • Welcome and train volunteer groups while fostering a spirit of gratitude, teamwork, and shared purpose.
