About The Position

The Times of San Diego, an award-winning digital nonprofit, is seeking interns eager to grow and develop, based out of its downtown San Diego newsroom. This paid, in-person internship will offer a range of journalism opportunities, including pitching and covering stories, discovering unique angles, perusing public records, and deepening interviewing, research, and writing skills. Interns will work with veteran editors for one-on-one coaching, smart edits, and thoughtful mentorship, and attend workshops conducted by award-winning editors. Depending on experience, interns may also strengthen website production, expand social media skills, or build on photo and video storytelling capabilities. Initiative, innovation, and critical thinking are key. The internship emphasizes versatility and exploring various story topics, types, and approaches. It is designed for individuals ready to learn, hustle, create, and make an impact in communities. Interns will gain hands-on experience with community-driven journalism, covering neighborhood issues, politics, arts and culture, sports, features, and enterprise reporting. In addition to the Times, interns may work with the San Diego Newsgroup of print/online neighborhood papers. The Times, established over a decade ago, covers politics, crime, business, sports, education, arts, military, science, health, and life, with a focus on the region's diverse communities and partnerships with other news sources for in-depth reporting. Times joined NEWSWELL in 2024, with neighborhood papers joining in 2025. NEWSWELL supports newsrooms in becoming nonprofit and community-focused, providing strategic guidance and operational support.
