Fall Intern: US Foreign Policy and Communications

About The Position

The American Enterprise Institute (AEI) is seeking an intern to support Distinguished Senior Fellow Danielle Pletka and Senior Fellow Marc A. Thiessen with research for opinion columns, long-term projects, and events. The research will focus on topics such as the Middle East, China, America's international role, and occasionally domestic politics. The intern will also assist with research for the 'What the Hell Is Going On?' podcast. Additionally, the intern will provide research and communications support for Kori Schake, Director of Foreign and Defense Policy Studies, on various foreign policy matters. This includes measuring departmental output, drafting promotional materials, and maintaining an understanding of the department's published works. AEI internships provide undergraduates, graduate students, and recent graduates with experience in research, writing, business, and communications at a leading think tank. The fall internship program runs for 12 weeks and is conducted in-person in Washington, DC. The program dates are either September 8 to December 4 or September 15 to December 11.

Requirements

  • Background and demonstrated interest in US foreign policy and national security.
  • Detail oriented.
  • Strong analytic skills.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Passion for foreign affairs.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with digital media.
  • Experience with customer relations.
  • GPA of 3.5 or higher from a top-ranking college or university.

Responsibilities

  • Assist Distinguished Senior Fellow Danielle Pletka and Senior Fellow Marc A. Thiessen in research tasks for regular opinion columns, long-term projects, and events.
  • Conduct research related to the Middle East, China, America’s role in the international community, and occasionally domestic politics.
  • Assist with research for the What the Hell Is Going On? podcast.
  • Provide research and communications support for Director of Foreign and Defense Policy Studies Kori Schake on various foreign policy topics.
  • Assist with measuring the department’s output.
  • Assist with drafting promotional materials.
  • Maintain a comprehensive understanding of the Foreign and Defense Policy Studies department’s published works.
