About The Position

This is a full-time position working within the Nutrient Analytical Services Laboratory (NASL). NASL provides chemical analysis of water and sediment for water quality monitoring and environmental research programs sponsored by various agencies and private sector organizations. NASL is a nationally accredited laboratory, and all staff are responsible for maintaining this certification. Initial training will focus on sample preparation and analysis of natural waters and sediment using various methodologies. The position will progressively involve more analytical and data management responsibilities, as well as routine laboratory operations. Other duties include maintaining scientific glassware, transporting shipping containers (not exceeding 25 pounds), handling and processing water and sediment samples, and assisting other analysts with wet chemistry techniques like preparing reagents and chemicals. Telework is not possible for this position.

Requirements

  • A B.S./B.A. degree in biology, environmental science or other relevant natural science is required.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and within a group.
  • Good written and spoken communication skills are essential.

Nice To Haves

  • A degree in the chemical sciences is preferred.
  • Prior laboratory experience preferred, particularly knowledge of colorimetric analytical methods.
  • Data management skills considered an asset.
  • A willingness to trouble shoot problems with instrumentation and communicate with service providers required.

Responsibilities

  • Preparation and analysis of natural waters and sediment via various methodologies.
  • Performing additional analytical and data management responsibilities.
  • Performing routine tasks in conjunction with the operation of an environmental analytical laboratory.
  • Maintenance of scientific glassware.
  • Transporting shipping containers (not greater than 25 pounds) to and from receiving area.
  • Handling/processing of water and sediment samples in preparation of chemical analysis.
  • Assisting other laboratory analysts with routine wet chemistry techniques such as preparing reagents and chemicals.
