Requirements

Comprehensive knowledge of the information and skills needed to diagnose, manage, and treat ocular injuries, eye diseases, and the visual system.
General knowledge of principles and methods for curriculum and training design, teaching and instruction for individuals and groups, and the measurement of training effects.
Thorough knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
General knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of user satisfaction.
Advanced skills in talking to others to convey information effectively.
Proficient skills in teaching others how to do something.
Proficient understanding of written sentences and paragraphs in work-related documents.
Proficient skills in communicating effectively in writing as appropriate for the needs of the audience.
Proficient skills in selecting and using training/instructional methods and procedures appropriate for the situation when learning or teaching new things.

Doctoral Degree (For Professor ranks) or M.S./M.A. (For Instructor rank)
Professional doctoral-level teaching experience or have residency training or equivalent.
Instructor: 1-3 years of experience in field related to optometry or its associated basic sciences.
Assistant Professor: Continued professional growth and success in full-time university teaching for one (1) year at the rank of Instructor or equivalent experience; scholarly contributions to the university, higher education, or one's academic area(s) of specialization that have received peer recognition. Must meet the current criteria for rank set forth by the faculty Evaluation and Promotions Committee.
Associate Professor: Continued professional growth and success in full-time university teaching for five (5) years at the rank of Assistant Professor; scholarly contributions to the university, higher education, or one's academic area(s) of specialization that have received peer recognition. Must meet the current criteria for rank set forth by the faculty Evaluation and Promotions Committee.
Professor: Continued professional growth and success in full-time university teaching for five (5) years at the rank of Associate Professor; scholarly contributions to the university, higher education, or one's academic area(s) of specialization that have received peer recognition. Must meet the current criteria for rank set forth by the faculty Evaluation and Promotions Committee.

Responsibilities

Provides high quality instruction in field of expertise, ensuring students meet course outcomes.
Plans, evaluates, and revises curricula, course content, course materials, and methods of instruction.
Selects and obtains materials and supplies, including textbooks and laboratory equipment.
Prepares course materials, such as syllabi, homework assignments, and handouts.
Prepares materials for laboratory activities and course materials, such as syllabi, homework assignments, and handouts.
Identifies specialized materials for outside reading assignments.
Initiates, facilitates, and moderates classroom discussions.
Supervises laboratory sessions.
Provides students course-related experiences outside the classroom if applicable.
Assists students who need extra help with their coursework outside of class.
Maintains student attendance records, grades, and other required records.
Evaluates and grades students' class work, laboratory and clinic work, assignments, and/or papers.
Compiles, administers, and grades examinations, or assigns this work to others.
Maintains regularly scheduled office hours to advise and assist students.
Advises students on academic and vocational curricula and on career issues.
Acts as advisor to student organizations, ensuring adherence to college and university policies and procedures.
Educate and train optometry students and residents to be competent optometric professionals.
Assesses clinical education needs and patient care needs using a variety of methods.
Coordinates continuation of patient care within NSU Health and with area eye care and healthcare clinics, hospitals, and facilities.
Maintains a clinical practice license and assumes patient care responsibilities while ensuring adherence to HIPAA, compliance, and standards of practice guidelines and policies.
Conducts research and/or scholarly activity in a particular field of knowledge and publishes findings in professional journals, books, or electronic media.
Writes and/or participates in grant proposals to procure external research funding.
Reviews papers for publication in journals.
Supervises undergraduate or graduate teaching, internship, and research work if applicable.
Participates in campus and community events, such as giving presentations to the public.
Actively identifies opportunities and provides service relating to fields of expertise and the profession for the benefit of internal and external communities.
Participates in college committees, task force activities, and events.
Collaborates with staff and colleagues to address teaching and research issues, and to improve students' learning experiences.
Serves on academic or administrative committees that deal with institutional policies, departmental matters, and academic issues.
Participates in student recruitment, registration, and placement activities.
Mentors junior and adjunct faculty members.
Keeps abreast of developments in the field by reading current literature, talking with colleagues, and participating in professional conferences.
Completes special projects as assigned.
Performs other duties as assigned or required.
