About The Position

The Kirk Newman Art School is a leading community-based art school with a rich history of nurturing creative passions. It welcomes tens of thousands of students annually, offering a fine arts curriculum for all ages. The school also hosts spring and summer camps for approximately 500 youth, intensive workshops, and visiting artist programs, contributing to a vibrant community. This is a part-time, contract faculty position.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent level of experience.
  • Three years of professional experience and demonstrated mastery in the discipline(s) taught.
  • Knowledge and experience in preparing and managing a safe, clean, and highly organized art making environment.
  • Practice training users on how to safely utilize materials and/or operate equipment.
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Commitment to contributing to an inclusive, equitable, and antiracist work culture.
  • Self-starter with an entrepreneurial creative disposition.
  • Takes initiative in addressing challenges.

Nice To Haves

  • Expertise in hand sewing, fiber design, basketry, clothing construction, papermaking, 3D mixed media, jewelry making, creative professional development, wellness, movement, and youth arts education.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and deliver engaging course descriptions for approval.
  • Collaborate with colleagues on course curriculum where necessary.
  • Communicate needed equipment, supplies, and classroom setup requirements in advance.
  • Develop and deliver course syllabi, lectures, and in-class activity schedules.
  • Identify and communicate expected student learning outcomes.
  • Create a welcoming and engaging learning environment.
  • Meet all classes regularly and on time.
  • Provide prompt feedback to students on projects.
  • Serve as a role model and mentor.
  • Problem solve, adapt, or adjust lessons based on student abilities.
  • Maintain availability to meet with students outside of class sessions.
  • Adhere to institutional guidelines.
  • Work cooperatively and possess excellent communication skills.
  • Demonstrate classroom management skills for all ages and abilities.
  • Attend and participate in all-faculty meetings and required training/professional activities.
  • Remain up-to-date on innovations, trends, and techniques within the discipline.
  • Evaluate course effectiveness and identify opportunities for improvement or new course development.
