About The Position

Under general supervision, the Facility Worker I performs a variety of facility operations, event support, custodial, maintenance, and grounds-related duties for the Civic Center, Fairgrounds, and related facilities. This position is responsible for assisting with the preparation, setup, operation, and breakdown of events while ensuring facilities remain clean, safe, secure, and operational for staff, vendors, and the public. Work involves physical labor, operation of equipment and tools, interaction with the public, and working flexible schedules including evenings, weekends, holidays, and split shifts.

Requirements

  • Some experience in event setup, custodial work, facility maintenance, convention services, or related work.
  • Valid Texas Driver's License and a good driving record.
  • Ability to obtain forklift certification within ninety (90) days of employment.
  • Ability to perform moderate to heavy physical labor, including lifting and carrying materials, kneeling, crouching and bending; pushing, pulling and reaching; and standing for prolonged periods of time.

Nice To Haves

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Previous experience working in convention centers, arenas, civic centers, fairgrounds, or event venues.
  • Experience operating forklifts, scissor lifts, or similar equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Secures and monitors Civic Center buildings, Fairgrounds, and related facilities before, during, and after events.
  • Opens and closes facilities for scheduled events, meetings, rentals, and public activities.
  • Sets up, arranges, and removes tables, chairs, stages, bleachers, risers, barricades, pipe and drape, partitions, banners, backdrops, and other event-related equipment.
  • Assists with the installation and operation of audio/visual equipment, lighting systems, sound systems, spotlights, projectors, and video screens.
  • Reads, interprets, and follows event diagrams, floor plans, setup sheets, and work orders to ensure accurate and timely event preparation.
  • Assists event organizers, vendors, exhibitors, and facility users with operational and setup needs.
  • Monitors events and facility usage to maintain a safe, orderly, and customer-friendly environment.
  • Responds appropriately to emergencies, alarms, accidents, spills, safety hazards, and facility concerns.
  • Monitors fire, security, and building alarm systems and reports issues to appropriate personnel.
  • Ensures compliance with fire codes, occupancy limits, safety regulations, and facility policies during all events and operations.
  • Operates and adjusts HVAC systems and lighting controls to maintain comfortable facility conditions.
  • Performs routine custodial duties including sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, waxing, buffing, vacuuming, dusting, and sanitizing facility areas.
  • Cleans and sanitizes restrooms, locker rooms, kitchens, concession areas, seating areas, offices, meeting rooms, and common areas.
  • Removes trash and debris from facilities and grounds; replaces liners and maintains waste disposal areas.
  • Assists with grounds maintenance including cleaning sidewalks, parking lots, entrances, and exterior event spaces.
  • Uses approved cleaning chemicals, disinfectants, and custodial equipment in accordance with Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and department procedures.
  • Performs routine inspections of facilities and equipment to identify maintenance or safety concerns.
  • Provides courteous assistance and information to patrons regarding facility locations, event schedules, and general inquiries.
  • Works assigned schedule and complies with City timekeeping, attendance, and workplace conduct policies.
  • Must have and maintain, without interruption, all required licenses, certifications, and job-related clearances.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
