About The Position

Responsible for performing custodial duties, minor maintenance, and other miscellaneous duties to ensure that all parish properties, school buildings, and facilities are maintained in a healthy, safe, and sanitary manner for students, staff, and the public. Duties include trash removal, lawn maintenance, weeding, snow and ice removal, various repairs, security vigilance, and setting up for parish and school events.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma.
  • At least 5 years' experience in maintenance and cleaning/janitorial duties.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Self-motivated and prompt in performing tasks.
  • Ability to work independently and demonstrate initiative.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities with frequent interruptions.
  • Thorough understanding of custodial methods, processes, procedures, and use of chemicals and equipment.
  • Knowledge of grounds and building tools, equipment operations, and ability to perform minor repairs to equipment.
  • Ability to read and understand documents such as labels and instructions, particularly on the use and application of cleaning chemicals and products, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Basic understanding of electrical, HVAC, and plumbing systems, carpentry or cabinetry skills.
  • Ability to perform minor repairs.
  • Ability to understand floor plans and building systems.
  • Ability to recognize the importance of safety in the workplace, follow safety rules, practice safe work habits, utilize appropriate safety equipment and report unsafe conditions.
  • Must be able to withstand constant exposure to climate change; working outdoors.
  • Be present at key functions and special events beyond normal office hours.
  • Maintain safe access to buildings and grounds through weather emergencies.
  • Must be on-call and available for emergencies.
  • Exhibit respect for the teachings and discipline of the Catholic Church.
  • Maintain a lifestyle that is in conformity with the teachings of the Catholic Church.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare school facilities for daily operations, including opening buildings, checking perimeter, and performing minor repairs.
  • Secure school facilities and grounds for safety and well-being, minimizing property damage and liability.
  • Perform light cleaning of school facilities and parish offices, including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, washing glass, and replenishing supplies.
  • Maintain the cafeteria by setting up tables and chairs, cleaning after use, and ensuring it is ready for operations.
  • Arrange furnishings and equipment for meetings, classroom activities, and events.
  • Assist with special events, including trash maintenance and equipment setup.
  • Respond to emergency situations requiring immediate attention, such as plumbing issues or structural hazards.
  • Ensure appropriate temperature settings for a comfortable and efficient work environment.
  • Perform ice and snow removal on walkways and steps leading to the church, school, and parish office/rectory.
  • Stay current on health, safety, and sanitization issues and procedures.
  • Properly use floor cleaning machines, other equipment, and necessary chemicals.
  • Empty trash and garbage containers and dispose of trash appropriately, ensuring compliance with local laws.
  • Assist with early arrival shipments of supplies and heavy lifting.
  • Assist with seasonal cleaning and decorating.
  • Perform minor and routine painting, plumbing, electrical wiring, and other related maintenance activities.
  • Change light bulbs and replace air conditioner filters.
  • Notify Pastor and Principal concerning major repairs or additions to lighting, heating, and ventilating equipment.
  • Inspect school facilities to ensure they are suitable for safe operations and identify necessary repairs.
  • Perform annual cleaning tasks during summer and school breaks, including thorough cleaning of surfaces, painting, floor care, and furniture arrangement.
  • Keep custodial closets clean and orderly.
  • Service job-related machinery and equipment, such as vacuum cleaners, scrubbers, and buffers.
  • Submit requests for necessary cleaning supplies to the Finance Office.
  • Check out and in with the Main Office when leaving and returning to school property.
  • Undertake special projects as determined by the Pastor and/or Principal.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
