About The Position

The City of Roanoke is seeking a skilled Facilities Trades Worker to join their Facilities Division within Public Works. This role involves performing preventative maintenance and supporting a skilled carpenter on a variety of hands-on projects. Responsibilities include resurfacing and polishing concrete walkways, maintaining facilities equipment, and undertaking basic carpentry such as wood and metal stud framing. The position also entails removing and installing ceiling systems, carpet, VCT tile, and ceramic tile, as well as working with wallboard, wall trim, doors, and windows. Additionally, the role involves concrete work, brick and block laying, sandblasting, chipping, and painting structures. As part of the Paint Crew, the worker will assist other Trades Professionals with painting work orders and may support other structural-related tasks. Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • Minimum of 6 months related experience in construction or mechanical environment.
  • Ability to read and comprehend instructions.
  • Ability to understand and follow specific oral or written instructions.
  • Ability to apply common sense to carry out written or oral instructions.
  • Requires a valid appropriate driver's license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Must be able to climb/work on ladders/lifts to reach high ceilings or walls.
  • Required to wear some type of respiratory protection in the performance of their duties.
  • Regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear.
  • Frequently required to sit.
  • Must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift up to 100 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required include ability to adjust focus.

  • May be required to pass CJIS (Criminal Justice Information Systems) background check due to working in secured areas, depending on area of assignment.
  • May be required to take classes or training to enhance job performance.

Responsibilities

  • Performs skilled and semi-skilled work across multiple trades, including mechanical, structural, and HVAC systems.
  • Assists with the repair and maintenance of buildings and equipment, supporting skilled workers with electrical, carpentry, plumbing, welding, and mechanical repairs and installations as assigned.
  • Utilizes standard trade tools and equipment to complete assigned tasks.
  • Performs unskilled manual work in the completion of carpentry projects.
  • Operates and maintains various types of hand and small power tools.
  • Assists in maintaining inventory control for tools.
  • Assists with event support, snow removal and other emergency tasks which may include nights, weekends or holidays as needed.
  • Adheres to established safety procedures.
  • Resurfaces and polishes concrete walkways in city buildings.
  • Maintains facilities equipment.
  • Takes on basic carpentry work, including wood and metal stud framing.
