About The Position

The Maryland Historical Trust (MHT), an agency of the Maryland Department of Planning, is seeking to hire a full-time Facilities Technician for Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum (JPPM). Located on 560 scenic acres along the Patuxent River in Calvert County, Maryland, JPPM is home to over 65 archaeological sites, more than 30 historic buildings and structures, and the Maryland Archaeological Conservation Laboratory. JPPM supports the preservation of Maryland's cultural resources and connects people to the past through the preservation and interpretation of our onsite historical and archaeological resources.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
  • Three years of experience performing skilled trade work in plumbing, carpentry, electrical, HVAC, locksmith, masonry, painting, or welding work.
  • Candidates may substitute additional years of experience for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
  • Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military experience at a rank of Corporal/Petty Officer or higher, as a non-commissioned officer in utilities classifications or mechanical maintenance management specialty codes in utility systems repair, on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.
  • Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

Nice To Haves

  • One year of experience in customer service or retail.
  • One year of experience in supporting private or public event planning, management, or execution that includes customer or stakeholder engagement.
  • Employees in this classification who perform electrical work and are assigned to facilities that mandate licensed electricians must possess a current license as a Master Electrician or other appropriate electrician license from a local board or from the Maryland State Board of Master Electricians, 500 N. Calvert Street, Baltimore, Maryland 21202-3651.
  • Employees in this classification who perform work as a plumber must possess a Maryland Journeyman/Gas Fitter License.

Responsibilities

  • Performs and supports routine building maintenance and repair, including electrical, mechanical, plumbing, minor structural, interior, and decorative work.
  • Inspects buildings, identifies needs, and assists in updating maintenance plans.
  • Inspects safety equipment to ensure proper operation.
  • Ensures all JPPM vehicles and equipment—including portable units such as generators—are maintained according to schedule and that required paperwork is submitted to appropriate agencies.
  • Inspects and performs preventative maintenance on vehicles and equipment and prepares them for seasonal changes.
  • Develops and updates maintenance schedules in consultation with the supervisor.
  • Assists in coordinating maintenance for mechanical equipment across JPPM, including development and revision of equipment maintenance schedules.
  • Conducts inspections, preventative maintenance, and scheduled checks of all installed equipment.
  • Performs daily condition checks, adjustments, and repairs.
  • Determines frequency and replaces intake air filters as needed.
  • Manages temperature, humidity, and hot water settings using Building Automation Systems (BAS).
  • Inspects grounds to ensure safety and security standards are met.
  • Assists in developing and updating grounds maintenance schedules.
  • Maintains site appearance through mowing, trimming, clearing, and general grounds care.
  • Ensures trails remain clear, safe, and accessible.
  • Removes downed or hazardous limbs and trees to ensure visitor and staff safety.
  • When scheduled, monitors events in the Patterson Center, Pavilion, MAC Meeting Room, and other venues during rentals.
  • Performs related maintenance and custodial duties; ensures spaces are prepared, monitored, and secured.
  • Provides information and assistance to renters and ensures compliance with rental agreements, including event end times and required cleanup.
  • Represents JPPM to the public when supervisors are not on-site.
  • Maintains clear communication with museum personnel and completes required logs, reports, and documentation.
  • Secures gates and buildings at the end of the day.
  • Patrols the site, identifies unsafe or illegal activity, and addresses situations safely.
  • Monitors maintenance and security-related computer systems.
  • Responds to alarms and takes appropriate action.
  • Serves as first responder to building system alerts, security alarms, and fire alarms, assessing situations and notifying proper authorities.
  • Provides first aid and CPR when needed and contacts emergency personnel as appropriate.
  • Interacts with law enforcement, DNR Police, firefighters, and rescue personnel.
