About The Position

The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high quality drinking water, managing wastewater and stormwater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. DEP's water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the system’s 2,000 square mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the City. The Bureau of Water Supply seeks to hire a Supervisor Watershed Maintenance I, within the Drinking Water Operations (DWO), North Directorate for a position at the Catskill and Delaware Watersheds. The Water Operations North Division is responsible for managing all aspects of the operations of Catskill and Delaware Watersheds. This includes planning, management, operation, maintenance, and stewardship of all NYC water supply infrastructure within these watersheds. Under general supervision, of the Supervisor of Watershed Maintenance III the Supervisor Watershed Maintenance I, will serve as Facilities Supervisor and will be responsible for managing and performing critical duties related to the operation, maintenance, repair, and inspection of infrastructure within New York City’s watershed areas. This includes reservoirs, aqueducts, groundwater sources, water and wastewater treatment facilities, roads, bridges, equipment, and associated lands. The Supervisor ensures strict adherence to all applicable federal, state, local, and agency environmental health and safety laws, regulations, policies, and procedures.

Requirements

  • A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent, plus three years of recent satisfactory experience in the operation, maintenance, repair, construction or inspection of facilities, equipment and lands in a watershed area, including aqueducts, reservoirs, water and/or waste water treatment plants; at least one year of which must have been in a supervisory capacity.
  • A Motor Vehicle Driver License valid in the State of New York. This license must be maintained for the duration of employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Janitorial experience as this position will supervise the Facilities Crew responsible for the cleaning and maintenance of staffed and unstaffed facilities throughout the Catskill Region
  • Experience in operation of a small surface water treatment facility
  • General Familiarity of MS Office including Outlook
  • Ability to navigate CityTime, timekeeping program
  • Ability to learn how to use a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) and a computer tablet to receive and create work orders, input data and closeout completed work
  • Might be required to use a respirator and maintain enrollment in the Bureau’s Respiratory Protection Program
  • May be required to have or obtain a Grade C NYSDOH Water Plant Operator License and maintain.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the operation, maintenance, repair, and inspection of infrastructure within the City of New York’s watershed areas, including reservoirs, aqueducts, groundwater systems, water and wastewater treatment facilities, roads, bridges, equipment, and associated lands.
  • Ensure adherence to all applicable environmental health and safety laws, regulations, policies, and procedures at the federal, state, local, and agency levels.
  • Operate computerized, electronic, and mechanical equipment as needed, and drives a motor vehicle to travel between work locations.
  • Estimate labor and material needs for regional projects.
  • Direct the operation and maintenance of equipment and approves use of materials.
  • Organize personnel and teams to accomplish routine tasks, special projects, and emergencies.
  • Coordinate support from other DEP organizational units and outside DEP through municipal agreements and by contract/purchase order for work beyond the capability of the region.
  • Complete employee evaluations of subordinates.
  • May serve as the Chief Operator of the Schoharie Campus water treatment system.
