About The Position

The Facilities Serviceperson and Grounds Maintenance role involves performing semi-skilled work focused on heavy cleaning, building upkeep, and grounds maintenance. The goal is to ensure the cleanliness, orderliness, appearance, and safety of the school's facilities and grounds. This includes tasks such as mopping, scrubbing, stripping, refinishing floors, washing restrooms, emptying trash, mowing lawns, trimming hedges, replacing light bulbs, washing windows, operating cleaning equipment, dusting and waxing furniture, performing minor repairs, planting, and maintaining equipment. The position also requires identifying and reporting building and mechanical issues, maintaining accurate records of time and materials, and adhering to safety and non-discrimination policies. Participation in training programs to enhance skills and staying updated on relevant developments is also expected.

Requirements

  • Experience in custodial work and other trades such as sprinkler repair and upkeep, lawn maintenance, trimming and fertilizing.
  • Ability to complete the Basic Facilities Service job related training program, offered by Broward County Public Schools and receive a Basic Facilities Service certification within the probationary period of employment.
  • Ability to operate labor saving devices such as shampoo and scrubbing machines, wet and dry vacuums, plus other equipment used in grounds maintenance.
  • Ability to do heavy lifting, climb ladders.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions in English on cleaning and equipment operation.
  • Ability to work well with others.
  • Computer skills as required for the position

Nice To Haves

  • Standard high school diploma or satisfactory completion of an approved General Educational Development (GED) Testing Program.
  • Bilingual skills.

Responsibilities

  • Clean all areas inside and outside the school, as directed.
  • Perform scheduled work according to custodial standards.
  • Wash and sanitize sinks, toilets, showers, plumbing fixtures and other restroom/shower room facilities and replenish supplies of soap, towels, etc.
  • Empty heavy containers of trash and debris from offices, classrooms, hallways, repair shops, etc., carry garbage cans, and compactor bags to dumpster and dispose of properly.
  • Mow lawn and trim hedges, shrubs, trees, etc., using riding or push mower, "weed eaters", edgers, hand tools or other appropriate equipment.
  • Replace light bulbs or florescent lights, clean fixtures, wash windows, trim trees, etc.
  • Operate heavy equipment to sweep, mop, brush, vacuum, strip and wax and otherwise clean floors, walls, walkways and other building surfaces.
  • Dust, wipe, wash and wax furniture such as desks, chairs, tables, filing cabinets, etc. and perform minor repair work, as needed.
  • Pick up and dispose of debris from yards, walkways, parking lots, etc.
  • Plant flowers, bushes, trees and other items, as directed.
  • Maintain equipment in a satisfactory condition by sharpening blades, lubricating parts properly, cleaning, as necessary, and storing them safely and securely.
  • Inform supervisor of needed supplies.
  • Identify building equipment, mechanical equipment and structural problems which require servicing or maintenance.
  • Inform immediate supervisor of needs and, call-in maintenance work orders as directed by facility administrator.
  • Practice safety continuously and ensure that a safe working area exists.
  • Complete all projects in a competent manner by ensuring proper recording of time and materials used.
  • Perform and promote all activities in compliance with the equal employment and non-discrimination policies of The School Board of Broward County, Florida.
  • Participate in training programs offered to enhance the individual skills and proficiency related to the job responsibilities.
  • Review current developments, literature and technical sources of information related to job responsibilities.
  • Ensure adherence to safety rules and procedures.
  • Follow federal and state laws, as well as School Board policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor, or designee.
