About The Position

The Facilities Planner works in collaboration with Senior Facilities Planners and is responsible for performing space programming and planning activities, including documentation, analysis, and recommendation, for the University's academic and support facilities. Works with space allocation standards to plan and/or work on layouts and functional programs.

Nice To Haves

  • Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline such as architecture, interior design, or planning.
  • Minimum of five years’ related experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in interior space planning, programming, layout, design, and with the ability to assess user needs, apply creative planning solutions, and resolve complex space utilization challenges.
  • Working knowledge of systems furniture an asset.
  • Strong knowledge of building design principles, architectural drafting methods, and applicable building and fire codes, and regulations, with the ability to interpret and apply these standards effectively.
  • Proficiency in computer-aided drafting and space planning software, including AutoCAD, with technical skills in drafting, graphics, three-dimensional modeling, presentation boards, and the preparation of design specifications and related materials.
  • Experience with signage and wayfinding planning and design, including the development of clear, functional, and user-focused navigation systems that enhance accessibility, circulation, and the overall user experience within built environments.
  • Construction experience, or in-depth knowledge of construction practices preferred.
  • Experience in post-secondary facilities planning preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to gather, organize, assess, and maintain information, records, reports, correspondence, and reference materials related to planning and design projects.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to present information clearly to groups and work effectively within a collaborative team environment.
  • Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
  • Strong interpersonal, listening, negotiation, and presentation skills with experience collaborating with diverse internal and external clients, consultants, and stakeholders to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Highly developed organizational, decision-making, judgement, and multi-tasking abilities.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the development of conceptual and schematic plans for various faculties, departments and administrative groups in response to requests from the departments, and as assigned by the Director.
  • Works with Senior Facilities Planners to develop master plans, master programmes, functional programmes and schematic layouts (including function, equipment and fittings) for planning purposes.
  • Responsible for planning management of department and faculty expansions. as well as new facilities, in accordance with master plan commitments campus wide.
  • Makes recommendations to clients regarding space utilization.
  • Interviews representatives of UBC departments, identifies requirements, summarizes information into functional and programmatic information; writes planning reports on same.
  • Presents options with recommendations to departments; manages process of identifying best solution for client within University parameters and guidelines.
  • Applies space allocation standards, using institutional planning experience and knowledge of building codes and construction practices, in order to test planning assumptions for relocation or new projects for various groups on campus.
  • Formulates and recommends move options for campus constituents affected by major renovations or new construction.
  • Audits departmental space, inventories equipment, furnishings and functions carried out within, through ongoing site visits.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
