About The Position

The Facilities Lead Mechanic leads the maintenance and operation of campus facilities and critical building systems, including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, lighting, Building Management Systems (BMS), energy management systems, controls, and related infrastructure. This position performs advanced troubleshooting, repair and optimization of facility systems; schedules and assigns work to maintenance staff; manages small projects; oversees vendor and contractors; and supports departmental and campus operational needs. The Facilities Lead Mechanic ensures building systems operate safely, efficiently, and in compliance with applicable codes, regulations, and institutional standards. This is a full-time on-site position with a schedule of Monday through Friday, 6am to 2pm, subject to change with department needs. This position is to be performed on-site as a condition of employment and could include weekends or evenings.

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree or technical degree from a recognized trade school, or equivalent experience
  • 7 years maintenance and/or building repair on complex systems
  • Possess a valid California Driver License and maintain an acceptable driving record
  • Advanced knowledge of HVAC, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, building automation systems and fire life and safety systems.
  • Experience troubleshooting and repairing commercial HVAC equipment, including air handling units, package units, split systems, pumps, exhaust systems, and associated controls.
  • Experience using Building Management Systems (BMS) and/or Building Automation Systems (BAS) for monitoring, diagnostics, scheduling, alarming, and system optimization.
  • Experience troubleshooting electrical systems, including motors, relays, contactors, transformers, variable frequency drives (VFDs), and low-voltage control systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, mechanical drawings, electrical schematics, control diagrams, sequence of operations, and technical manuals.
  • Experience utilizing Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) to document work orders, preventive maintenance activities, and asset records
  • Knowledge of safe work practices, proper use of hand and power tools, and general building maintenance procedures.
  • Ability to independently diagnose building system failures and determine appropriate corrective actions.
  • Ability and willingness to work in confined spaces, at heights, outdoors, and to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Flexible to work evenings, weekends, and respond to emergency repair situations and campus operational needs as required.
  • Strong customer service, communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to prioritize workload, manage multiple assignments, and perform work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students, vendors, and contractors.
  • Read, write and understand the English language to be able to interact with staff, faculty and vendors

Nice To Haves

  • Certification in EPA Universal, HVAC, OSHA 10 or 30, and or Building Operator

Responsibilities

  • Provide complete, timely and high-quality service on assigned tasks and work orders received verbally, written or via electronic devices.
  • Perform advanced troubleshooting, diagnostics, repair, and maintenance of HVAC, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, lighting, building automation systems and fire life and safety systems.
  • Operate, maintain, troubleshoot, repair and optimize BMS, energy management systems, controls, and associated infrastructure.
  • Inspect, test, and maintain fire life safety systems and equipment: coordinate repairs and corrective actions as needed.
  • Perform building repairs and general facilities maintenance, including plumbing, carpentry, drywall, celling systems, doors, windows, locks, and related building components.
  • Perform exterior maintenance and grounds related tasks as needed to support overall campus operations.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on facility systems and equipment to maximize reliability, efficiency, and service life.
  • Respond to emergency maintenance calls and facility incidents
  • Operate forklift, grounds vehicles, power tools, hand tools and related landscaping equipment
  • Assist in maintaining adequate inventories of tools, equipment, replacement parts, and maintenance supplies.
  • Provide assistance with delivery of materials, equipment, furniture and supplies
  • Lead, schedule, assign, and monitor the work of maintenance mechanics and technicians, to ensure efficient completion of preventive and corrective maintenance activities.
  • Train and provide technical guidance to maintenance staff on equipment operation, troubleshooting techniques, safety procedures, and best practices.
  • Conduct routine inspections of campus buildings, grounds, and equipment to identify deficiencies, safety hazards, maintenance needs, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Promote and maintain a safe working environment by following established safety procedures and report hazards promptly.
  • Assure compliance with appropriate safety practices and procedures and with applicable federal, State and local codes, regulations and requirements
  • Coordinate, oversee, and inspect the work of contractors, vendors, and service providers to ensure compliance with scope, quality, safety and performance expectations.
  • Manage small facilities projects assigned by the Director of Facilities or Facilities Manager
  • Maintain system documentation and as-built information
  • Support campus events and departmental operation by coordinating room setups, equipment moves, and logistical support services
  • Perform other duties as assigned
