About The Position

To perform manual to semi-skilled work in the maintenance and repair of City buildings, facilities, and grounds. Performs various manual to semi-skilled building maintenance and repair activities including painting, carpentry, electrical, plumbing, masonry, welding, and mechanical maintenance. Performs general carpentry work in the construction, repair or alteration of floors, walls, roofs, stairways, partitions, doors, windows, screens and various other wooden articles; builds or repairs cabinets; hangs and finishes drywall. Performs routine maintenance of grounds such as mowing, trimming, weeding, planting of flowers and shrubs, and other landscaping activities. May install, troubleshoot, and maintain electrical systems; replace faulty switches, sockets, plugs, fuses, insulators, and other parts of electrical systems. Sands, paints or stains walls, woodwork, cabinets, tables and other wooden articles. Identifies defects or malfunctions in plumbing systems; repairs leaks; installs replacement fixtures including toilets and sinks. Cuts and fabricates metal to build or repair various structures. Maintains heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems; changes filters; installs duct work and chassis parts. Pours and finishes concrete; builds concrete forms. Drives truck to transport supplies, materials, and/or workers to and from job sites. Performs related tasks as required.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or GED equivalency
  • 2 - 3 years experience in the maintenance of buildings, grounds, and other public facilities
  • Valid NC driver’s license (a CDL-B may be required before or after employment)
  • CPR and First Aid
  • May require certification as a qualified pesticide sprayer
  • Medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, crouching, reaching, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions.
  • Vocal communication is required to express or exchange information and ideas by means of the spoken word.
  • Hearing is required to perceive and comprehend information
