About The Position

Friends of the Children – SF Bay Area (Friends-SF) is seeking a Facilities & Custodial Associate to maintain their building, ensuring it is a safe, welcoming, and well-cared-for space for youth, families, and staff. This role involves day-to-day ownership of the building's cleanliness, readiness, and minor maintenance. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, proactive, and enjoys problem-solving to keep the facility in optimal condition for program activities and community building.

Requirements

  • Reliability and punctuality, and the ability to keep a consistent schedule.
  • Strong attention to detail and pride in keeping spaces clean and cared for.
  • Ability to work independently and identify needs proactively.
  • Resourceful, problem-solving approach, including the ability to research and learn how to fix minor equipment or appliance issues.
  • Comfort with basic hand tools and tasks like hanging shelving, mounting artwork, and assembling furniture.
  • Experience in custodial, janitorial, housekeeping, facilities, building operations, or professional cleaning work.
  • Good organizational skills, especially around supplies, storage, and keeping spaces ready.
  • Judgment to juggle several routine building needs and prioritize tasks.
  • Clear, professional communication with staff and vendors, including flagging concerns promptly.
  • A warm, respectful presence with children, families, staff, volunteers, and visitors.
  • A commitment to creating welcoming, respectful spaces for people from all backgrounds.
  • Must pass fingerprint and background checks.
  • Must pass pre-employment drug screening.
  • Must have safe driving record and valid driver’s license.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous custodial, facilities, building operations, or maintenance experience in a community center, youth-serving organization, school, or similar setting.

Responsibilities

  • Keep spaces clean, healthy, and welcoming by cleaning and sanitizing restrooms, kitchens, program spaces, offices, and other shared areas.
  • Sweep, vacuum, mop, and spot-clean floors, and wipe down surfaces.
  • Empty trash, compost, and recycling, and maintain stock of restroom and shared space supplies.
  • Complete scheduled deep-cleaning projects and respond to immediate cleaning needs.
  • Maintain cleanliness of building entrances, exterior areas, garden, and parking lot.
  • Store custodial equipment and cleaning products safely and organize supply closets.
  • Conduct daily building and grounds walkthroughs to identify cleaning, maintenance, safety, repair, pest, exterior, garden, parking lot, or supply needs.
  • Perform basic repairs and troubleshooting, including furniture assembly, hardware tightening, hanging shelves/artwork, minor drywall repair, and researching solutions for equipment issues.
  • Report any leaks, lighting issues, pest concerns, broken equipment, or health, safety, or security concerns to the Director of Operations.
  • Track supply levels, maintain inventory, and notify the Director of Operations when reordering is needed.
  • Receive and put away deliveries, and organize storage areas, kitchens, and supply rooms.
  • Provide approved vendors access to the building, guide them, coordinate visits, document completion, and report unresolved concerns.
  • Review and address routine building-support requests, update their status, and escalate as needed.
  • Set up rooms for various events and programming.
  • Reset and clean spaces after events.
  • Support seasonal building projects, including deep cleaning and organizing.

  • 40 hours of paid sick leave allotted each year, with annual carryover of unused hours.
  • Paid vacation, accrued at a prorated (half-time) rate of approximately 60 hours per year.
  • Holiday pay includes an annual winter closure, based on your regular half-time schedule.
